Rant rant rant

Ok how hard is it to find a cardan joint for the front of a jeep? Every god for saken drive shaft in a jeep has this on the front drive shaft. Nobody knows where to find it or what it even is!!!!! I am so sick of people not knowing how to do there damn job. I have called NAPA (4 different locations) Autozone, Carquest, oriellys, murrays.

This is why AMERICA is going in the shitter. f&^kin stupid people there is only a single joint in jeeps-- umm no there are not for anybody that wants to know.

Best line told to me today--
them-- Sir are you sure you own a jeep?
ME--- yes
Them-- are you sure it is a 97?
ME-- yes
them-- Sir I think you don't know what your talking bout?
ME-- Where is your manager?
them-- Sir I am the manager.
ME- You a god damn moron that does not deserve to work even at a taco bell or even at a car wash. You are useless have a great day.

haha nice thanks needed that! OR are you being serious? If serious it is the joint in the front shaft that holds 2 u joints, a ball and socket with some springs. If your truck starts making angry sparrow noises good place to start checking.

^ I about went threw the phone at the guy he is lucky I don't have any driveshafts on my truck right now or he would of been wearing a 33in tire.

Awesome I have called everywhere in 25 mile radius and have no clue what I am talking about. The dealership said that it would be easier to buy a new front drive shaft from them. a whoping 489.00 not including shipping to there store WTF! A tom woods for the front is only 325.00.

Hey JD... You're just confusing the parts guys. I still carry my ASE certification as a parts specialist. And yes, sometimes people call in wanting bone head stuff or don't know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, most parts guys today can't differentiate whether or not the caller has any knowledge because most parts guys today have no knowledge themselves. I agree that the manager should have handled it different by losing the condescending tone. The best thing I've found is to just look up the parts myself using their on-line catalog.

If by "Cardan" you are referring to the "CV" part of the front shaft, the parts guy just wasn't reading his listing right. The "CV" on a TJ is like an "H" block with 2 joints in it. This is where the confusion sets in.

To most seasoned parts guys, a Cardan joint is used as a wheel joint on early "60's" Chevys, some early Fords and Military axles. A true Cardan joint has no grease seals on the bearing caps of the U-joint and has no Zirk fitting on the trunnion. The whole joint is bathed in gear oil inside a housing.

See, they use computer catalogs now as opposed to the good old fashioned paper catalogs (my preference). And, you have to remember that Computer Geeks with zero parts experience program these and most of the info is lost. Jeep DID make a TJ in 97 without the CV on the front shaft. So, in a way the parts guy was kinda right.

Assuming you have a 4.0, here are all the u-joints for your Jeep (NAPA part numbers):

Universal Joint (U-Joint) - Front Axle Shaft - Left and right Outer 371
Universal Joint (U-Joint) - Front Driveshaft at Front Axle 280
Universal Joint (U-Joint) - Front Driveshaft at Transfer Case (w/ "CV" at Transfer Case) P380 (2 required)
Universal Joint (U-Joint) - Front Driveshaft at Transfer Case (except "CV" at TC) P369
Universal Joint (U-Joint) - Rear Driveshaft at Rear Axle P369
Universal Joint (U-Joint) - Rear Driveshaft at Transfer Case P369

I say NAPA part numbers but NAPA joints are all made by Precision now. They used to be Spicer but I guess they were a little too pricey and NAPA wanted to stay competitive.

Hope this helps!

Be sure, if you're replacing the CV joints to also replace the centering ball and spring. I have to go look that one up and get back to you.

Cain got it! wahoo thanks for the help. Called murrays again and talked to a old white guy that found it! Will have the parts tonite. Front shaft will be done tonite wahoo! Yes everything is getting replaced. both joints and the ball socket springs.

I will be making a huge parts list for things napa or any of them couldn't find so people don't have to go thru what I do on this damn jeep

Wonder if that is what is making noise on mine. I have checked both axle joints and the "front" front drive shaft u joint...

You would have to pull your front shaft all the way off to check the u joints at the transfer case. I would be betting on that is your issue.
