Still needing sugestions on how to find a rattle behind the glove box. It sounds like metal on plastic and it's extremely annoying especially when the hard top is on. It's not the battery or battery tray, or anything under the hood, all is tight and good there. I can figure out out to remove the darn airbag or dash infront of the air bag to inspect back there. Sounds like something hitting in that area.

Could be something very simple??

My TJ had the same rattle, I pulled the glove compartment apart even the air bag & found nothing. Then to my amazement I found one day when cleaning that it was the roof latch above the passenger side that was lose & clinking. Could have sworn it was in the glove box
It makes the same rattle with roof on or off and doors on or off.

I had that too, and it was driving me nuts. I had a friend drive around while i took stuff off, and found nothing. Then one day I shut the passenger door and I heard it. After 50 door slams I found that it was the hood support wire thing in the engine compartment.

Same problem

I've had that same rattle behind my glove box for the past two weeks. I still have NO idea how to fix it, BUT I have noticed that it stops when the glove box is open and I PUSH DOWN ON THE DOOR. Give that a shot, maybe we can figure this out before it drives us mad!:banghead:

Maybe you need to tighten the retaining strap screws if the noise stops when you put pressure on the open door... Mine is from my radio antenna wire not being strapped down to a wiring harness :whistling:

Not the golve box, I had the golve box and parts of the dash out and had my buddy drive me around and shuved my hand, eveywhere I could up inside of there, I even brought a heavy wooden dowl along and put pressure on places my hand couldnt' get to and no stop. So far the only thing that helped a little bit was I put new shocks all the way around and it rides a little better, that actually did help a little but indirectly, not by fixing the rattle. Just shaking less.

Oh yah one other thing I took my front cowl off because one person said they had a lose windshildwasher arm. That made since and sounded viable. Nothing, everything under there was tight and no debre what so ever. I was actually happy to see no rust or anything bad at all going on under there on my 97 JJ (Junk-Jeep)

And driving with the doors off made no difference, my roll up windows do rattle a bit in the door casing but I can live with that, it's mostly when slaming them close. I'm going to try a few more things today, but keep in mind I've been trying to find this issue for five months, I'm still looking but:-(

I had a rattle in that same general area that I could hear whenever I turned up my radio and the dash speakers would vibrate enough to make it rattle and I tracked it down to the air vent tube vibrating against the lower portion of the dash. It sits flush with the bottom of the opening of your glove box.

Just put new front front fenders on it all tight there

Thanks for keeping the ideas coming. Last fall I put new front fenders on the JJ, exact factory match. So, I had to take everything off the fenders and I even took battery tray completley out and sanded, primed, repainted, etc. Everything on the fenders is, new bolts, locking nuts, etc. They are better than new:thumb:. Therefore I have basically ruled out anything under the hood, or connected to fenders. The sum-buck is still driving me crazy, with it being cold and the hard top on it just magnifies it 10xs. I wish I had a safe way of riding on the outside of the jeep on that side so I could listen and determin if its really behind the dash or under the hood.

I had a rattle in my dash also, mostly when sitting still at idle. I remoed the glove box thinking that was it, nope. Left it outgot a piece of 3/8" plastic tubing, while letting it idle I cllimbed in the passenger side. Holding one end of the tubing in my ear like a stethoscope, I began fishing the other end all in side the dash listening for the rattle,it amazing what you can hear with this. Just as I was giving up, and removing the tubing from the dash, the other end passed the dash speaker. Turns out 2 mount nuts on the speaker were loose. Tightened them up, problem solved!!!! Good luck with yours, hope its some thing as simple as mine.

I had a rattle from the same area. Come to find out a screw had came out that holds an aluminum box to the fire wall by the battery. Drove me nuts. Give it a shot. Might be yours. Good luck.

Last summer I had a really annoying rattle from the passenger side of the vehicle, and found that it was my sun visor not being clipped into the holder. It didn't sound like it was coming from there, but I was happy to find that was it.

Mine (2006 TJ) turned out to be a rattle from the passenger defroster vent/hose. Had to unbolt/unscrew everything east of the center console to finally get at it. It really only bothered me when the stereo was up loud AND I was stopped at a light or something. Road noise would almost drown it out.

Take out the glove box and follow the plastic hose up to where it meets the passenger defrost vent. If the hose or vent is too close to ANYTHING else, it'll rattle against it at high volumes. I just put some felt adhesive tape between the parts that were too close/touching. Rattle's gone, and thank God. Had been living with this PITA for 3 years.

On my 97 I had an annoying rattle I couldn't track down for the longest time. I tightened everything I could. It Seemed like it was coming from the dash but when I had a passenger it would disappear. Cutting to the chase, it turned out to be coming from the passenger seat. One of the neoprene rollers on the outside seat track had disintegrated and the bolt (?) was banging against the rail.
