Rattling after serpentine belt change - bearings?

After I changed the serpentine belt in my '99 TJ, there is no more chirping, but there is a rattling in/around the power steering pump. It sounds like something is clanging around inside one of the pullies, maybe a bearing? Anyone else have the same problem or an idea of what it might be?

Pull the belt off and hand spin all the pulleys like tensioner, idler, water pump, fan, etc. See if you can isolate the noise to one area

Check to see if the power steering pump bolts are tightened. I believe the bolts have to be loosened slightly to adjust the belt tension. Could be wrong though...too hot outside to verify right now.

I have seen the wrong belt cause this, if the belt is one size to big, it can cause a rattle from the tensioner, that rattle could be traveling into the P/S Pump.

Im not saying this is your problem, but it doesnt hurt to check the basics, all you did was replace the belt,so....

Pulled the belt back off, and all pullies except the power steering pump spun freely with no noise. Power steering pump doesn't spin freely, and sounds like it is grinding when I spin it by hand. Can I replace the pully/bearings on the front of the power steering pump, or am I going to have to change the whole pump?

If your pump is bad, you will have to change the entire pump.

I did notice a slight fluid drip under the pump. I think replacing the whole pump is in order. Would a refurbished pump work as well as buying a new one? I would rather not spend the $200+ if the $50 refurbished one will work just fine.

Did this solve your problem. I believe I am getting a similar noise in the same area. Have not yet taken the belt off to check all of them.

Yeah I'd bet it's the water pump. See if there is any play in the fan, if so the waterpump is bad good luck!

I bought a waterpump and belt for less than 200 and they where all new I think the pump was like 100

I think I read somewhere if you adjust the belt too tight the bearing will go bad on the water pump. I replaced my belt several months ago. Hope that's not what it is.

a going-bad water pump sound will make you think there are marbles inside the front of the engine.

To clarify, the power steering pump was bad, and a rebuilt replacement was installed. Problem solved! Thanks for all the advice.

This noise is definite more from the driver side than the front of the engine. Gonna pull the belt and start spinning some pulleys and see what happens. Thanks
