Ready to buy my first jeep

I have been looking and looking for several months, I'm in no hurry right now to get one. One was posted to craigslist today, its a 1997 4.0 I6 5 speed, 140K he's asking 5500. He says it needs tires. It will also come with a bikini top. I will have to drive an hour and a half to look at it to see if I want it. What else should I look for when I buy my first?

Looks better than what I got for $5500 here in PA! Just look underneathe it, and look for massive leaks and check for rust rot. Mines a rust bucket on the underside, but a 4.0 Manual Tranny jeep is hard to come by around here. They go for top dollar and I got tired of trying to find a gem after a couple months of searching and driving all over the place looking at complete junk with people asking way too much for the junk bucket they had. All in all, I am happy with my jeep and it suits my needs just fine... it's not a daily driver though.... Mainly for offroading.

Are those 35" tires? The 4.0 manual IS driveable on 35's with 4.11 gears, but the highway is not fun times... On the plus side, if it's in decent shape, you could pay $1500 to regear and still be ahead of the game on cost.
