Talking Rear axel clunking noise FIXED

I just though people might benefit from this since I could not find information about this fix anywhere.

I noticed one day I got the clunking noise from the rear when I shifted in reverse, drive and hitting the gas from a complete stop. I had someone look under the jeep while I was parked and they said the drive shaft was moving a 1/4 inch. I thought my rear diff was ruined because that's what it sounded like. I also noticed my bushings from my sway bar were shot. The hardware was rusted solid but still allowed the bar to shift. I took the sway bar and end links out and changed out the bushings...what a pain in the ass. You need a vise and a variety of sockets to do this! After that was done I reinstalled it and the sound vanished. Apparently the 2 points on the axle and the 2 points on the frame where the sway bar connects are super critical to axle movement even though my lower control arm bushings are new and tight. The loose sway bar was causing the entire axle to shift back and forth. If anyone is thinking about changing their bushings, it's a very good idea. $16.00 from quadratec.

Very cool, there's nothing like finding a cheap fix to an expensive appearing problem.

That happened to me Friday with my Toyota Solara which looked like it had a major oil leak from the main seal. The engine and undercarriage was covered with oil that it was hard to tell where the oil was coming from. I had been driving it for over a month and adding oil regularly fearing the worst. Turns out the gasket on the oil filter had simply blown out. 30 minutes at the local coin-op carwash to clean things up and a new filter and oil and things were fine again. Phew!

When you have a choice, buy American.

Empty your rear diff, inspect the teeth and use spray brake cleaner to clean them. Add new oil and do some figure 8's.
