Wednesday a friend and i decided to make a rear bumper for my tj. we headed down to the metal yard to check out the scrap pile and got enough materials for two bumpers. we decided to make two and sell the second one or something. i'll try to get pics of the bumper as soon as i can.
heres a list of materials:
2"x4"x1/4" wall rectangular stock 55" long (can sub thinner material if you like but I like it beefy!)
approx 7" length of 2 1/2"x2 1/2"x1/4" wall stock for receiver (can sub a store bought receiver tube.. Northern has one for like $10)
approx 7" of 2 1/2"x1/4" thick flat stock for chain plate
approx 6" length of 3"x1/4" wall square stock (for mounting legs and receiver lip)
approx 18" of 3"x3/8" thick flat stock cut in half for the bumper mounting flanges
approx 18" of 2"x1/4" thick flat stock for bumper end caps
approx one foot of 2"x3/4" thick flat stock for clevis mounts
...and a bit of expanded metal to make a logo (we are dorks...but my friend has other stuff he can use the logo for.)
BTW we are both high school kids having fun playing with metal and a welder over our break.
After we broke down the cost of labor and materials and the like we are lookin to get $300~ for the bumper. If anyone is still interested send me a pm.
2 days workin for both. i worked 10 hours total and my friend worked like 15 (thats per bumper). sooo i guess 20 and 30 hours. the cleaning and grinding metal took up most of the time. next time i think we will get the shackel mounts made instead of making them from scratch. we used an acetelyne(sp?) torch to cut them out and it was ROUGH so grinding took forever.
You are looking like quite the entrepreneur. Here is a little thought. Build the bumpers to more or less the same design but advertise them as remote air tanks. Make sure they are sealed and put the air inlets in a save place. Perhaps drilling the rear bumper on the Jeep for the air inlet. I don’t know of anyone else selling bumpers specifically as remote air tanks. Next time on your Shackle mounts just use a chop saw. You’ll get a very nice clean cut with little or no grinding necessary.
we were just talking about making an air tank bumper. lol. we were thinking about using a chop saw but ours wasnt capable of the angles on the steel. we came up with $300~ based on labor and materials.
Thats what i'm thinking. Its great being a high school kid. There are a lot of kids who "offroad" and "need" bumpers and such. ive gotten a lot of people asking what we can make. word of mouth in a high school is awesome.
Too bad it ruins your eyes though. I know a person that welds for living and he cant see anything. His glasses are bigger than the hubble telescope out there.
i just sold it this weekend but i think we are gonna make other stuff too. i want to try a roof rack. im gonna make a receiver hitch rack and we've already made a cargo rack that goes in place of the rear seat.
