Rear bumper, with swing-out

I bought my Jeep used. It came with a Smittybilt rear bump with swing-out. I am not thrilled with this product, in fact I am a little leary of it. It just doesn't seem safe, I keep thinking at one point this thing is going to break, and dump my tire onto the roadway. I took off the tire and swing-out yesterday, There was so much play in the swing-out moving fore and aft. that it was actually moving the rear of the jeep around while I was driving, At least I think so. It is smoother now.

Anyway what would be a very good replacement for this, without breaking the bank. I do have ome 2942 springs in the back, soft-top, and carry a 33' tire. So weight of a set-up shouldn't be a problem.

I am just going to throw this out there because I need a rear bumper with a swing out. The thing is I don't need one with a 2" receiver hitch built in because I already have a Reese.

I have a body armor front bumper and I have no complaints but I am sure it is not up to par for most folks on here.

Here is a body armor rear with swing out that looks pretty good to me. I am not sure of the price but I would imagine it is somewhere between smittybuilt and the higher end components. I just found it today so I am still researching and trying to find the price. Looks like you can add some accessories to it. Not sure what you are looking for but....

Anyway, here it is.

Edit...found a price which is on the low end.
Third pic down is the bumper with the swing out.

Edit again, this looks like it is just the bumper with swing out post and you also would have to purchase the swing out separately. I don't know why they make this so hard.

Never mind, that body armor is still going to be pushing $700 when you buy both pieces but it looks like most that are quality are around $600-$1000.

Check out ARB, it is $600 but I don't know the quality of ARB.

Look at the rancho. I'm thinking about it. I like the hinge being sandwiched in the bumper frame. May be a pos, but I don't have a grand for a bumper either!

I didnt like the idea of running a bumper tire carrier combo either due to the added weight and the cost. Have you thought of just getting a tub mounted carrier? There are several different types out there but for the cost and good reviews I ended up getting the Bestop tire carrier. Great value and this thing has held up great and half as much as an average bumper combo. Not trying to sell you on the Bestop but out of the three listed below this is the only one that opens with the tailgate. Thats what sold me on it. Heres a few of them...

You are in luck. I am looking at DirtWorx myself. $500 for a bumper that will hold 2 gas cans, hi-lift jack and your tire. Plus it has a receiver built in. For $10, he will add a CB antenna mount too. That is what I am doing His Ebay page is cheaper than his website so go there and get the price and email him and he will get you fixed up. Hope it helps.

I have never seen a bumper mounted spare tire carrier I would run. Just too much weight/moment/leverage against that one main support point... at least in my personal opinion.

There are a couple spare tire carriers that use a support design I think is the best way to go, which is to support the entire weight of the carrier via hidden brackets that bolt to the rear rollbar support bases. This type of support uses 50% more support points, three vs. two, and it eliminates the bumper completely. Thus letting you use whatever type of bumper you want to use.

I've been running the Off-Road Fabricators spare tire carrier for over ten years now on two different Jeeps and I've yet to see a better design. On my previous TJ, stolen last year, the ORF carried a full size 35x12.50 spare plus two full 5 gallon jerry cans for 8+ years and it was still quiet, rattle-free, and sag-free the last day I saw that Jeep. Which is why I installed the same exact carrier on my replacement '04 TJ last year.

Jeep | JEEP | 85201 TJ SWING AWAY SPARE TIRE/CAN CARRIER &Active=Yes

They make two versions, one of which also carries two 5 gallon jerry cans.

Here area a couple pics, sorry none are all that good. The red Jeep is my previous Jeep (that is Blaine/Black Magic Brakes in the red Parka), the black one is my current Jeep. I have the wheel and jerry cans off the Jeep in the last pic because that particular trail (Sledgehammer in Johnson Valley) is tough enough that a spare tire can get hung up on some of the rock climbs.

My friend has that SB bumper/carrier on his YJ and it flexes and moves around all over place. He actually takes a ratchet strap to secure it to his roll bar when wheeling.

Take the tire carrier part off of the bumper and get a tub mounted carrier. That will keep you going and you can get a new bumper later if you need to.

I wanted the Or Fab carrier, but could not afford it at the time. I ended up with the Bestop tup mounted carrier. Seems to be working fine.

So I am liking these tub mounts. Question to those that have them is do they seem to be good and solid mount. Is there any chance of them messing up the corners? do you feel that your tire and mounts throw around the back-end of the jeep?
