is this to cover a hit or to help prevent one?

It's to prevent one but also to add strength to the area for mounting an Or-fab style spare tire and gas can carrier.

Warrior makes a smooth corner guard that isn't excessively heavy like some are, that's what is on my TJ. If you go with them, use stainless steel pop-rivets instead of the aluminium pop-rivets included in the kit. Aluminum pop-rivets are too soft for this application and will eventually fail. :)

To what jerry said The ones I am using have grade 8 bolts that are recessed. Genright I think make a good set. I am going to also run a metal strip to hold in the body for the just in case getting cuaght.
