Rear Door always swings out and crushes into tail light.

I googled various ways to track down a solution and did a forum search here but no luck.

2006 Jeep TJ.
We open the door to put in groceries or whatever and we always seem to be on a slant and the door slips out of our grip and the first couple hundred times it was fine, then sometime lately it made a cracking noise. That seemed to have been some type of black plastic parts in the hinge that try to restrain the door swing. Well that is all cracked and loose so the door now goes all the way out to impact into the top of the right rear tail light. Just tonight my 14 year old let it slip and it really cracked the top of the tail light.

Is there a good after market fix to this problem?

Thanks

Good luck finding aftermarket parts to fix that...sounds to me like you overextended the hinges or something...I haven't looked to see how it's attached, but that's my guess. You may need to order whatever parts you broke.

Aside from that, you may be able to figure out a way to run a strap from the inside of the door to to the inside of the jeep to keep the door from swinging all the way open...but you'll need to figure out a way to anchor both ends so they don't rip out.

This place usually has lower prices on OEM parts...maybe they'll carry whatever it is you broke:

Quadratec has this product. Rugged Ridge 11238.11 - Rugged Ridge Aluminum Tailgate Stop for 87-10 Jeep® Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK* & Unlimited - Quadratec
I've also seen some hydraulic struts, like minivans use, that attach similair to this and keep the tailgate open.

Sorry man but that comment made me laugh . . . what did you think would happen Personally I think your Jeep is pissed at you for trying to turn it into a grocery getter!!! I'd imagine you'd be able to replace the hinges . . . if you can't find something thru Quadratec, check with the Stealership or a Junkyard. Or you could just roll with it and swap them lights out for some of the flush LED style.

I have the same problem. Over time I guess the hinges just get bent a little too much and it just goes all the way. The older hinges look like they can't do that, but I think in 03 (not sure what year exaclty for these) they changed to a new design and I don't like them. The older ones were better. Idk why they made them like this, but anyways, I'm just going to get new hinges and see how long they last.

This only holds it open. It will not stop it from opening too far.

For a quick fix you could get a piece of nylon strap about the same length as on your doors and attach it with self tapping screws!

yeah i have an 04 and mine has the same shi**y problem. I have looked into the rugged ridge product on Quadratec but i think Atthehop is right, it will only hold it open. A nylon strap like the ones holding the door will be the best bet.
Dont you just LOVE cheap plastic parts!!!!

I have been driving wranglers for over 10 years and actually been driving for over 40 and taught my self to open doors very carefully all the time. Just pay attention to what your doing. This is like smashing your door into the car parked next to you. I hate it when someone does that to me so I pay careful attention to never do that to anyone.

I agree, this is the most cost effective solution IMO .

you probably had a heavy oversized spare which broke it. Im sure you can get metal hinges if you take it to a welder with some steel

i removed the cheap black (ABS?) plastic pieces of trim

Yesterday I happened to pull up next to another wrangler and this guy had I think an 03 or 04, anyway the hinges did not have the big pieces of plastic trim around them.
So he showed me that his hinges swing clear of that top edge of the tail light.
So I figured what the heck and removed all the pieces of trim off my jeep.
It had 2 pieces per hinge, one that stays with the door and swing and 1 on the other part of the body.

Now the rear door swings over the tail light all the way out til the big ass spare slightly bumps the right quarter panel. I will leave it this way I suppose.

Attehop, I applaud your parking lot etiquette but maybe you don't have kids?

Thanks forumites.

I have 4 kids and with some proper training they learn the same habits as their parents. BTW they are 29, 27, 25, & 20 now and I believe they still respect other peoples property.

it's weird that the 2006 even has this problem because they fixed it in earlier years

YEAH, same on my 98. I was looking for a way to make it easier to open, but now i'm afraid i might now like the other extreme.

Ill stick with the tailgate i have, after all. Spring and Summer are coming soon and that means no top, so no tailgate use!

I just ripped it off.
no screws to unscrew
it looks fine to me.
kinda looks like it matches my yellow door hinges.

I have four kids, 30, 28, 26, & 21 and they all act responsibly. Keep in mind they always mimic the parents.
