Rear seat won't 'tumble'

Biggest issue (as in I haven't been able to rememdy) with my new to me TJ is getting the back seat out so I can remove and clean the carpets. I can get the back to fold okay, but thats as far as I have been able to get. I have spent hours on the darn thing! I can't be the first one with the problem. Anyone have a diagram or something to help me?

Once you get the back of the seat folded down, you should be able to flip it up. Then, on older Jeeps you have to push/pull the seat to one side of the mount and lift out. On newer Jeeps there is a small bar the length of the bottom of the seat that you push down on to release the seat. Once the seat is released drag it out of the Jeep.

if it is "tumbling" okay--than only 2 points it can be hung up on--I believe my TJ kinda stuck one time and I just lubed up the mechanisms for the front portion--shouldn't be too hard to see the issue---not to be a smart a$$ but I did have a lot more trouble if it was not fully tumbled before I released the front catch.

not too sure what type you have but on my 98, you pull up on the release lever on the rear-left of the seat to get it to fold. it should now just flip forward. to remove mine, on the bar that it pivots on, to the inside of the floor brkt(both sides) there will be small wire retaining clip(that sits in a groove on the bar) you only need to remove one. whichever one you remove, slide the whole seat that direction. the bar on the other side will slide out of the floor brkt-lift that side above the floor brkt and slide the seat the other way releasing the bar from the other floor brkt. now just muscle the seat out-you'll fig out the easiest/best way for you. i am also in the habit of putting the wire clip back where it belongs so i know where it is-these things are small and easily misplaced.

Forgive me guys... I really do appreciate you trying to help; But did you read my original post?

Whew... Can't think of a way to make this any more clear, perhaps a video of the back folding forward, then the seat not tumbling?
I can read, I have the owners manual... I know how it is supposed to work.
The title of the thread is 'Rear seat won't tumble'
My signature shows I had a YJ for 14 years.. Besides, why would I give a rats ass about how older models work as if I didn't already know?

Finally, and once more.... It is obvious the mechanism that holds the back of down and preventing it from tumbling is corroded I know that is part of the problem.. I have been trying PB Blaster and everything seems free, but not free enough or something is broken in there..

My '02 releases the seat to "tumble" as soon as the seat back is tilted forward. I'm not sure about your '03. If it's shifted to either side it may be hung up on one of the latch channels that are mounted to the wheel wells.

sorry i misunderstood--thought you needed a "diagram" as you didn't understand---had never heard of that issue (not that it doesn't happen)---most rear seats start to tumble as soon as the seat back leaned forward.

Good luck

LOL... No need for an apology! But I will take the opportunity to bump this up to the top again.
Messed with it again for a half hour yesterday... Frustrating!

If I don't figure this out, Momma is taking it to the dealer. She wants that carpet out so she can clean it.

I recommend an eight foot pry pole with a short section of 4x4 laying behind the seat as a fulcrum. It WILL tumble and you will find out what's been preventing the tumble....I'd duck when it comes loose

I like the way you think.
I have considered a cigarette pack size piece of C-4 at each latch connected by detcord, but I am concerned it may harm the carpeting.

I realize this doesn't solve the issue of the seat--but if I remember correctly the front of the carpet on my TJ (where it goes down over the rear deck lip) I could raise it level with rear deck fold over and push/ work it out from under seat. It would get the carpet out to be cleaned.

While typing this a guess came to me--as you are not original owner ---any chance PO put a clamp/ bolt or "hold down" somewhere besides the conventional seat hardware? Part of the reason I removed my seat, was I preferred it folded down but it would tumble and sometimes slam back down. Maybe previous owner installed a "DIY" hold down so it won't tumble? Just a guess.

Did you try prying on the latch like I suggested?

I tried prying the latch up, as in 'rolling the top of the C-clamp forward' as it seems the direction it goes to unlatch, just not far enough. I even put a good size nick in it with a chisel and tried to hammer it forward. I would love to see one folded up so I can see what has to move for sure.
Frustrating S.O.B.

Shoot me for asking the simple question but have you pulled the rear female seat belts out from the back of the seat? They tend to hold it down and I forget sometimes too. I read most of the thread but didnt see where anyone has suggested it yet. I will run out when it stops raining enough so that I can take pics of it folded up for you.

Edit:
On my 2000 sport if I can fold it forward then it will tumble. that latch that holds the back upright is the only thing holding the entire seat down. Seems like you have something else holding it down like someone else on here mentioned.

I've got the same problem, you can get the seat out by using pliers to pull the two rear tabs so it will tumble. Haven't found a fix yet but the problem is caused by the latches not moving far enough during the fold to allow for the tumble

If you read my link, I had the same problem. For whatever reason one of my latches stopped opening enough. I took a grinder and shortened the tip a little and that solved it.

Trust me Neil, when I get the seat out, I will fix whatever the problem is with it.
BTW, bought my 90 from Lenihan in Marlton many moons ago and had my office on Main St for about 6 years across from the firehouse.

I had this problem once and what it turned out being was a washer had wedged itself in the mechanism on the left side, since it was lodged up sideways, I couldn't tell it wasn't supposed to be there. I finally got to prying with a flat head screwdriver and noticed a piece was loose (and different from the other side). Got it out and viola! Seat tumbles again.

Wow, I am also having the same issue. I just got my 2004 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 3 weeks ago, and I have been lovin it. I'm also dealing with two problems that I see lots of others are having. Low Oil Pressure at low idle when hot, and the damn rear seat won't tumble. OK, I noticed that the left side mechanism is sticking. The right side (when standing in the rear) is free, and I can lift that side a bit, but the left side is stuck and won't budge. I need to take a look at it today, so I really appreciate your comments here.

06-Rubi rear seat

The seat is kept from tumbling by two cam locks in the lower portion of the seat that grab a pin on the seat mounting rail. When the top of the seat is folded forward two arms on each side of the seat (at the hinge) retrack the the cam locks and releases the lower seat from the mounting rail and it can tumble forward.
Both sides have to release for the seat to tumble. Release your seat back and fold it forward--you should see the two flat arms (rods) see if one or both sides is\are disconnected, either at the upper point or down on the lower seat where it moves the cam lock. If either or both arms are disconnected the cam lock is spring loaded to latch and will stay latched.
seat rail--you can see pin that the camlock grabs

Bottom of seat--it is tumbled up--you can see the open camlock

Bottom of seat camlock closed--I tumbled the seat up then raised the upper seat back to its normal riding position to get a pic of the camlock closed

Flat rods\arms that connect upper (vertical) seat back to the lower camlocks--one on each side of seat

Good luck
