IMO its the best aftermarket tire carriers because it opens together with the tailgate. on a DD its easier to handle than a carrier that you have to swing away before you open the tailgate.

I bought a LOD tire carrier. It's ok. not great but it gets the job done. One thing I really dont like is the mounting points. It only has a few (4 i think) bolts mounting it to the little rear crossmember. I'm going to eventually modify it so that I can tie it in to the frame b/c I dont trust it as a recovery point the way it is now

Just make sure the bolts don't pull through and check them from time to time.
Here is a friend of mines Bestop carrier.

I'll take the bumper mounted. Mines been on for 2 years, has been beat around on the trail and pulls a heavily loaded trailer several times a year. Still opens by pushing the latch with 2 fingers and slams shut just like when I first installed it. All this and it has never rattled at all.

The Expedition One bumper is pretty cool too. It puts the weight of the wheel on the bumper, yet still opens and closes with the tailgate.

check out the LoD setup. Its reasonable and a lot of guys run them. http://www.lodoffroad.com or at http://www.4x4xplor.com/lod/index.php
If you dont do any hardcore offroading, a simple bumper and tire carrier would be a good setup. the LoD Xtreme duty runs right around $400. I installed it by myself in about 2 hours. Also, as someone mentioned about the LoD, it is strong enough for recovery and towing. The TJ is only rated at 2000lbs for towing anyway, and the LoD has more than enough mounting points for that application. HTH. Cheers!

Have one fabbed for you! That's what I did for $400. 1/4" thick bumper, 1/8" tire carrier, customizable to how you want it.

they do however to install a bigger tire its recomended to install a heavy duty tire carrier to hold the bigger tire.. the stock one is not as strong and to install a tire carrier, that requires removal of the stock one.

I have the LoD as well. It holds my spare and nothing else. I wanted a Light weight carrier to keep the weight down and nothing fancy. When your rocking and rolling on the trail I didn't want anything that was going to help flip me over. I can do that on my own.
