Recovery gear/kit

Ok so Im wanting to put together some good, yet basic, recovery gear. I dont plan on doing anything too extreme and nothing ill be doing will involve me getting stuck in mud. I live in phoenix . All I have is a hi lift at this point. I know I need to put tow hooks on the front but what else should I buy? Keep it reasonably priced

What I did was buy the HiLift jack ($49) and the HiLift Offroad Kit ($69)which had the following stuff:

1) Gear Bag
2) Leather gloves
3) Shackle
4) Tree-saver strap
5) Winch tensioner (two chains that make the jack a 7000lb winch)

I added a "snatch strap" (2"x30') and was good to go. I already had tow hooks both ends of the Jeep. A couple of years later I added a 15' tow chain which is handy for dragging downed trees off the trail.

Then you discover that winching a Jeep by hand is enough trouble and work to make you a better driver. But later when I got a Warn winch, I just added a couple more shackles, a snatch block, and the winch remote to the red bag. But for $110 you can postpone the winch purchase for years and get the lift/tires.

I got a regular old "Keeper" strap at the hardware store. Make sure you get the one WITHOUT hooks which stretches and "snatches" another vehicle out as you drive away. The one with the hooks at either end is for towing a disabled vehicle on a paved road.

I live in California so eventually I ended up stowing an "Earthquake Kit" in my Jeep which added the following:

1) First Aid Kit
2) 3 gallons water
3) 3 days MRE rations
4) Warm clothing & hiking boots
5) Fanny pack and canteen
6) Wool Army blanket

I keep that in there at all times in case the "Big One" hits. When I go camping I add a winch anchor and tools and spare Jeep parts which otherwise live in my garage.
