Regearing 4.0l Manual 5sp on 33's

Hello, I have finally decided to regear my jeep which is running 33's but even at the workshop i seem to get conflicting advise between 4.10 or 4.56's

My vehicle doubles as a work vehicle and toy, even on freeway i rarely go over 70mph, and I tow a trailer for work, which as you can guess on 3.07s is frustrating.

After reading nearly all the forums I was convinced to go with 4.56's right up until the mechanic said 4.10s would be better, so, I know this is a heavily discussed issue but maybe there is someone using there jeep as i do with a regearing already done, and could point me in the right direction.

1998 TJ 4.0l I6 5 speed manual, I have K+N air intake, air raid throttle body and upgraded cat back exhaust and random tech cat convertor.

My 4:11s are acceptable with 33s., however, 4:56s would be a perfect match... I drag an off road trailer, so someday, I'll be re-gearing. Really, you trust a mechanic??

I have a set of ARB's with 4.56's for sale. They are for a Dana 44 (Rear) and Dana 30 front.

I just changed to 4.56s with the exact same as you. 98 TJ 4.0L 5-speed 3.07s. 4.56s are PERFECT!!!! I do not go over 70 either, but now I can if I want to , and it is just about the exact same RPMs as I was having to do in 4th with the 3.07s. Especially if you tow a trailor or play in the Jeep do not go 4.10s. I honestly would have regretted it, and almost went with them myself.

Your mechanic is clueless and lacks knowledge about jeeps. You need 4.56 gears. I've run 4.56 and 4.10 with the 5 speed and 6 cylinder. 4.10 gears are a joke compared to 4.56.

I just had 4.56 put in 4 months ago. I had concerns about highway driving at 70+. I do not regret my decision. At 70 on the interstate I'm @ 2750 rpm 75 is @ 2900. Hills are no longer an issue, I can pull them in 5th without downshifting. I have pulled a 18' trailer a few times hauling stuff to the farm without concern. 4.56 all the way

I went with 4.10 gears only because it was cheaper to swap axles from a 4 cylinder. Also I planned on running 33" duratracs which are a very light 33" tire. It works nicely and im not overworking my dana 35 with too much power. Also I was told that 4.10 gears in a dana 35 dana 30 combo is the most reliable for 33" tires. With 4.10's and 33's my speedometer/odometer didnt have to be adjusted either! However, if I had dana 44's I would have definitely gone with 4.56 in case I wanted to move up to 35's (which I already do).

4.56s for sure. I had them installed about two months ago and now my Jeep feels normal to drive again. More importantly, I'm able to wheel in first gear 2wd without having to ride the clutch all the time. I wouldn't even 2nd guess your decision...listen to everyone on here that has them. That's why this forum is so great...I don't trust any mechanics anymore unfortunately.

Your speedometer is likely off or you may have a different transmission. Those RPMs are correct for 4.56 and 33" tires with the 5-speed, perhaps your speedometer hasn't yet been properly recalibrated. For those RPMs with 4.10, 5-speed, and 33" tires you'd have to be driving closer to 78-79 mph.

Ian1168, definitely go with 4.56. 4.10 "works" with 33" tires but that ratio doesn't fully restore the power lost from the larger diameter tires like 4.56 does. I made the mistake of regearing to 4.10 15 years ago when I used to run 33" tires & I realized my mistake within just a few days.

Nope, tranny is AX-15, 4.0 with 101,811 miles, stock air box, speedo is exact and verified with GPS and my handy dandy Golden Eagle 2 radar unit from my Patrol Car.
Only difference I can think of is mine is an 8.8 rear end with limited slip, I also run ally wheels and TA/kO's.

Maybe I'll jack her up and count the rev's. (I paid for 4.10's and that's what is on the receipt...) I reckon stranger things have happened....

I think Skurvy brings up a good point. I too believe 4.56's are the way to go ideally.... but the actual price of regaring both front and back is quite high. It is generally far cheaper to buy used 4.10's axles out of a 4 banger.

If you're willing to spend the amount it takes to regear, I'm not sure why you'd stick with the D35 rear at all.

I may have goofed. I run these numbers in 4th gear. If he was in 5th running those numbers then I am not close. 5th gear I am at 2350 rpms at 65. 75 I am closer t0 2500.
I have plenty of pedal, and run in 4th around town a lot if I am in a 45 or under zone.

Anyways, here in the flat country I am content with the 4.10 but if I lived in the mountains where I am originally from (Asheville NC) then I would opt for the 4.56.

If I make up my mind to go to 35's then I will regear to 4.88 ( I am 75/25 that I will)

Hi all,
Thanks so much for the feedback, 4.56's is the go for me, you will all be happy to know I have found another mechanic who stated, " def 4.56's, it will pull like a train again, especially with the trailer! ".
Will be nice to have 5th gear back again!! might stick a ECTED locker in the front aswell whilst its all out!! cheers

Just wanted to add a quick note to a couple of the other comments.
Its not that i don't trust mechanics, its just a fact that I can repair and fix just about everything else on my TJ, but I will be the first to admit, gearbox and gears is a little bit out of my depth and unfortunately you have to trust them sometimes. This is why I feel the experts on jeeps are in my opinion are found here on the forums, and advise and experience from these forums is what really counts, and being that regearing can be quite costly, I only want to do it once and have it done correctly. I have heard horrendous stories of people attempting to regear themselves costing twice as much to fix!!!!

Anyway, Thanks again for the feed back, it has been extremely helpful.

I have a 99 tj 4cyl. 5 spd I am putting a 4 inch lift in. It has 4.10 gears. Should I also regear to 4.56 as well being that it's a 4 cyl? Or 4.88's?
