Regearing and Tranny Question

So my problem is I've got a 2002 TJ sport that has an I6 and the stock auto tranny(get to that in a minute). But its in serious need of an economy boost from 10mpg and power gain because it wont even get out of its own way on a small hill. I'm running 35x12.50 tires and don't want to go down in size because I've got bigger plans for the jeep later down the road, wont be putting any bigger tire on ever though. I've read some post that say 4.56 is enough and heard 4.88's is better, which do i need? Also I'm unsure which axles i have I'm the only owner to do anything to it so i know the axles are stock and untouched inside, but i don't know the size/kind... Now for the water to sink the boat, money wise. The stock tranny is starting to slip between 2nd and 3rd, where do i go from there?!?! Just get a stock tranny to replace it and have it all done at once, or is there a little easier way to save my wallet some heartache? Also what is the best option tranny wise if going back stock isn't the answer?? thanks any help is good help!?
