I just messed up rear diff last night coming home from firework display. Sudden pop from rear while cruising around 50 felt like we hit a dog, following that clicking coming from rear. It is definatly something in rear diff... so instead of going back to the factory 3.73 I want to go to 4.56 what do I need to do and what am I looking at spending? Can I put 4.56 in front and rear axles just as it sits now? btw its a 2000 4.0 5 speed with 33's
Thats cheap. Cost around here is around $1200-$1500. I would recommend a shop that specializes in that type of work.
Plan on lockers? great time to install them also, save some loot in the long run
Well for starters what rear axle do you have? I would think long and hard before spending money on the dana 35. Now if ya have the dana 44, then your set.
Did the same as you, got a regear for 975 parts and labor. So I decided to get chromoly shafts and an ARB installed at the same time. Most shops will charge you about 600-750 each axle. Atleast here in California. I shopped around for awhile and found a guy I could trust and does quality work. btw you will love 4.56. Huge difference especially offroad.
Not sure what axles they are the stock ones 2000 wrangler sahara 4.0 5 speed did they put different ones in different models how can I tell without opening diff cover what I have all I know is the metal tag has 373 front and rear... and by reading how much everyone likes the 456 gears with 33's as long as I been driving it with the 3.73 (which I thought was pretty peppy) it will prolly be like a supercharger feeling getting 4.56 no more downshifting to maintain speed uphill.
and oh yeah this is my daily driver 90% of my miles are highway so Im not trying to go hardcore with all the locker and extra stuff...mainly looking to get back factory power it had with those baby tires

the rear end it has now has the little metal tag on it also besides the one stating the gear ratio... hard to read but it can make out slip so is this limited slip? and what does that tell anyone else about what I have that is currently clicking and broken?
I'm not sure that your case is the same as mine was, but I had a similar loud "POP" come from my rear axle, followed by "click click click click" as I drove. It turned out I had snapped the cross pin that holds the spider gears in place... a new forged pin instaed of the stock one and I was back on the road with no problems.
ok... I now know we have a d44 in rear with limited slip and a 35 up front with 3.73's since not a hardcore offroader or crawler Im simply wanting to regear to 4.56...when doing this do I need to buy a new limited slip for the rear is this a locker. can someone please make me a list so I can calc up some $ figures such as gears, carrier (if needed), bearings...
Found a kit on ebay for dana 44 4.56 gears and rebuild master kit and dana 35 4.56 and master rebuild kit about $550 hows that sound and would anything else be needed besides labor
Sorry for the lack of response. $1200 for parts and labbor give or take a few hundred dollars for regearing the front and rear axles. Be a good time to add a locker if you want one as well

Reverse cut is used in high pinion differentials to keep the pinion running on the strong side of the ring gear. Straight cut gears we don't run in axles but those are just straight 45 degree bevels on each gear, very noisy and not nearly as strong as the spiral gears you'll see in axles. Your Dana 30 and 44 are both standard gears, neither reverse or straight cut.
A good list of parts will b gear sets for front and rear axle, depending on miles you will need a minor or master install kit, and you gear oil. This is the right time to throw a locker n there whether it's a 1000$ arb or 250$ lockright, do a locker now.
Look on eBay and all over the Internet for your gear set. Most of the time you can find them much cheaper. I saw a set of motives for my 9" at 112 on eBay and 176.xx but 449.99 from jegs. Big name catalogs will jack up prices
If you have a lot of tools and mechanically include I have a link to how to set up gears. I'm sure if you studied it, you could do the gears yourself. I may try it myself
