Removed Cat, Runs Better......

Catalytic Converter was almost stopped up on my 97 2.5 Wrangler, took it to muffler shop and had it removed and replaced with straight pipe, they put the 02 sensor back on to the straight pipe, Jeep runs better and stronger and I do not have a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT on. Was planning on using a plug non-fouler with sensor to keep the light from coming on but am not going to have to do anything to it but let the good times roll.

They check for cats here in NJ plus its against federal law for the shop to do it. But then look where you live.

I don't think he said it in a bad way, just that most states down south are known to not have inspections and that living in a smaller town is even easier to get away with certain things. But just a FYI it's a 10k fine per cat.

Don't get caught. It' s a very exspensive federal fine.

Not worried about getting caught and think its a foolish law to be required to have one anyway. Too much gov't in our lives today, I quess us Southerners will always have a difference of opinion with stupid laws and penaltys, if Obama goes in for a second term with more of his crap you might see us secede once again. Like Bocephus said, "I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a four wheel drive and a Countryboy can survive." Ya'll get out and vote!

It's a federal law and I am sure their lawyers have gone over it and you will not win.

Agreed - good old USA law, where OJ and Casey Anthony can get away with murder but if Joe smith is caught with out a cat converter he will have to pay $$$$$$.

In Washington I believe it's a $25,000 fine for the shop that removed it and the person who owns the vehicle.

25000 is insane. I agree with running pipe through it and having the look of one. The 'hi flow' cats are expensive. Bit I don't know if worth it or not

The first cats on cars were introduced duringthe Ford administration and were not required by law until the Reagan administration made it so. Their genesis was in Nixon's Clean Air Act. Responsible stewardship of our enviroment that we all love to enjoy (and get to in our Jeeps) is a bi-partisan issue. I am happy to lose a couple inconsequential horsepower to make sure the mountain air is still fresh when I get there.

Agreed, I remember in the 60's and 70's you needed to replace your air filter twice a year because the air was so dirty. Now they last for years. For my kids and their potential children I welcome the regulations for clean air to breath, at least up here in the north east.

Yeah, everyone knows that catalytic converters don't do anything anyway, right? All it does is slow your vehicle down. Take 'em off! Who cares about clean air! Woo Hoo! $2750 federal fine for removing it? Screw em!

If clean drinking water was the only reason then I would give up more than the one or two hp that is lost because of our cats. Most southerners live off of the land or enjoy using it so I would think you would want clean air and water. And secede, really??? You know jeeps are made in the north right
Don't try to leave us again, we love you guys!!!
