Replaced engine - how does it affect value?

Looked at a 1999 Sport. The ad said it had 82,000 miles. It did, I guess - at least the replaced engine did. The odometer said 204,000. Replaced engine was done about a year ago. Other than that, it ran great and the interior was very nice.

How would the engine and odo affect its value? It kind of scares me off but if I can get it for the right price ....

He is asking $9900. I think its worth about $6500?

I don't think you get to set the value of the vehicle to the mileage of the new engine. because the rest of the parts in the Jeep have 204,000 miles on it. I think you start at what the value of the Jeep at 204,000 miles is and maybe go up a little due to the fact that the engine is new.

The valve is only determined by what's on the odometer. That's it.

I would stay away because something doesn't add up. He's saying that the engine was replaced about a year ago, but has 82,000 put on it in that one year? I don't think you have any way to verify what the owner says and even if you could 82,000 miles in a year is pretty crazy.

Just remember this:

ANYTIME you buy a vehicle that has been "modified" you are taking the risk that the previous owner made the mods and you must take into consideration the possibility that he was a "hack" that might not have known what he was doing. This goes for replacement engines, suspension parts, paint, etc. Always purchase a used vehicle with the intent that you are going to have to make repairs and corrections. If you are questioning something expensive (such as this engine swap) then your best course of action is to walk away. There are thousands of Jeeps out there for sale. Find one that you feel more comfortable purchasing.

I have a replacement engine in my TJ. I expect it's value to be that of it's original year with original miles, even though with a newer engine I hope it lasts longer! (I'll NEVER sell it though. Love this thing)

I think the seller replaced the old engine with another used engine. Considering the miles on the frame and used replacement engine, I'd consider it at least a salvaged value discount if I were buying. However, if for example it was a nice restored CJ with a new crate 350 engine, value would be much higher.

Probably like any other mod, at best it's worth half of what the mod cost, be it a used engine, or a new 350 crate.

with all the great used TJ's out there why even consider this one? i would feel differently if good used TJ's were impossible to find. plus, i bet less than 1/2 of 1% of all TJ's made now have replacement engines in them.

but as others have said, price it based on the odometer and condition if you insist on buying it.
