X3 on the Bestop Sailcloth replace-a-top recommendation. It's much (!) quieter than what came originally on your '98 and Bestop is the company that makes all of the soft tops for Jeep. You can't buy better quality. You'll notice the decrease in noise inside with the Sailcloth fabric, there is a dramatic reduction in the interior noise level with it.

I'm going to second the Viking top. I had the best top and its a nice top. The Viking is made from the same sailcloth that best top uses. It eliminates all the bows and folding to remove the top. All flapping against the the bows and sound bar are eliminated. All you hear is wind rushing over the header bar. Its so much easier to install than the best top that you can't even compare it. It has greater visibility out the sides and the back. It converts into a full safari top in an instant. The price is the same as the best top and can be purchased from their ebay store for much cheaper than what is posted on their website.
This sounds like an ad, but this is just a great product that you will not be disappointed with.

Viking now uses Sailcloth? Sailcloth is a proprietary fabric that was sold only by Bestop. Has Bestop started licensing it to Viking?

This is from their website:

Quote:
VIKING SOFT TOPS
Viking Soft Tops are currently made for Jeep Wrangler (TJ) 1996-2006. Our plans are to expand the line of soft tops to the LJ (Unlimited 2004-2006) and YJ (1987-1995), including the yearly YJ's that came with the CJ style roll bar. After the LJ's and YJ's have been completed design of the new JK models will take place.

The Viking Soft Tops are made in Southern California with OEM quality materials such as the HAartz Denim and Sailcloth fabrics that came on the Jeeps. We also use the same 40 gauge tinted window material that is the same as the facotry tops. The zippers are all YKK factory type coil zippers that are easier to operate because they do not turn corners like the original ones.

Very cool, thanks for that surprising information. You certainly can't go wrong with Sailcloth fabric for a top.

I have the Viking(see icon). Looks cool, safari top thing is great, pretty noisey at highway speeds-but I'm comparing that to my hardtop. The connection to the windshield header seems to be the source for most of the noise. Pricey, but I'm happy with it in the summer.

Last fall, I honestly picked up my black soft top at a Jeep dealer in Paducah KY for only $200! It was Brand new off of an 05 Rubicon. The owner didn't want it and left it at the dealership shortly after purchasing the Rubicon new. They had about 10 tops in all. I also scored a brand new tinted window kit for $20, and a used set of bestop soft doors with windows for another $20. My buddy bought a set of tinted windows and a set of used black tube bumpers for $100 and a new set of 16" Rubicon wheels and new goodyear tires for $200 for his 98 TJ. To some, this may sound too good to be true but it's all true! I'd start by calling around dealers trying find steals like this. I know the dealer I went to had quite a few when I left.

So what would be the advantage of a $675 Viking that sits on the sport bars vs. the Bestop Sailcloth at $420 sitting on the OEM frame?

i found a brand new OEM sailcloth, sunrider soft top from an 06 Rubi with tinted windows and all the hardware (including door surrounds) still in the plastic, on Craigslist for $400 for my 97. it fit perfectly and was way better quality than the non-sailcloth OEM top i had on my 2002. i had to buy some upper doors separate b/c the Rubi had full doors. they were made by Rampage and other than the super cheesy plastic windows, they were nice upper doors. the guy i bought the top from bought the Rubi with both tops and never used the soft top before he traded the jeep in.

personally, i would search craigslist for a deal like that. if nothing that way, i would get nothing other than a Bestop sailcloth (i can attest from personal experience that it makes all the difference in the world) replacement top using your factory frame and hardware.

Don't buy the pavement ends. I put one on a friends jeep and I though the quality was poor. The fabric and windows were thiner than the factory ones. Also the fit seemed a little loose, especially since I installed it in December and it was 12 degrees out side when I did it.

I agree on not buying Pavement Ends. Pavement Ends sells Chinese made tops and is owned by Bestop, to be their less costly line to compete with the cheap soft tops. Bestop does their best to disassociate themselves from Pavement Ends because of the lower quality they sell when compared to Bestop's superb quality.

I have a Best top Sailcloth I installed in 2004 and it is quiet and warmer than my other Jeeps top. It is worth every penny. The condition of the windows is very good and the tinting was very nice as well.

i giving anpther vote for the bestop. they definitely hold up to the abuse of off-roading, being taken up and down on a daily basis, having snow sitting on top, etc.

4point--- how easy is it to go completely topless? i have been doing a lot of research on the viking soft top and im almost sold on it. except this is going to be my first summer with a jeep and really cant wait to go completely topless. can you just roll it up and throw it in the ass end?

IMO everything about this top is easier because of the lack of a frame. I have not had a chance to go completely top less on this thing yet and I probably wont. I will use the Safari feature because I had the sun beat on me for a full day of wheeling and its no fun. However it will take much less time to remove the top completely and you will be able to stow it away better than top OEM or Best top top.

This is where I purchased mine. The seller is the manufacturer.
