Riding on Spares

When I bought my 2006 LJ Unlimited last week, most of the tires were pretty beat. The only good tire was the unused spare. The previous owner had bought some Rubicon take offs with 255/75/17 bfg mud terrain tires. My local Sams club wants $260 per tire + tax. I thought if I could find one more tire like my spare, I could combine them and replace the two worst tires. I ended up finding 3 never used Spares from different sellers on Craigslist/Facebook. All 3 had the little knobbie feelers still on them. One for $50, one for 75 with a different rim I can probably sell for $25, and I paid $100 for the last one. But that one was already mounted on the same rim and will replace my rim that had some scratches. So I have four "new" tires for less than the cost of 1 at retail. I feel like I pulled off some sort of scam.

Two of them were made in 14 and two in 15. Even my beat tires were made in 15. I never knew there was an "official" expiration of 6 years. These seem a little more heavy duty than you your average steel belted radial car tire. I hope so anyway, as I will only put 2,000 to 3,000 miles a year on this jeep. So I need another 10-12 years out of them.

I recently bought 5 JK Willys wheels with the OG BFG mud tires on them, and they were pretty much in the same state your tires are...two were about 70% tread left, the spare was brand new, and the other two were about 10% left and cupped very badly. I mounted them all except the brand new spare, putting the cupped tires on the front and the good tires on the rear, then shopped on craigslist and found a brand new spare for $100.

I just dropped the Jeep off at the shop last night to have the two new spares mounted/balanced on the front, and I'll save one of the bald/cupped tires as a spare until I can find another new spare. In total, I spent $475 for a set of black '14 Willys wheels with zero scratches on them, two brand new BFG mudders, and two slightly worn ones. Even if I have to spend $200 on two more to replace the rear, I'm still way under budget compared to what I would have spent buying everything new from a shop.

My friends said the same thing some here have said..."why not just buy all 5 brand new so you know they are worn the same, etc." I drive a few thousand miles a year in the Jeep, and it has mud terrain tires on it. The ride is never going to be amazing and I don't mind at all, it rarely sees the highway anyway. Plus, now I have money I didn't spend on wheels/tires to spend on other things.
