Roll Bar Padding Recommendation

Hey guys,

A year ago, I bought my first TJ and it had been left outside and developed mold on the roll bar padding. No matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of it and it was causing some serious breathing issues if I put on my soft top. So I had to take them off and toss them out.

I'm now looking into some new padding because I've hit my head more than once while working on my jeep. I'm quite tired of it.

Any recommendations on brands or where I could go to pick some padding up? I live in the bay area in CA.

When I added additional roll bars to my cage, I bought some roll bar padding from Summit Racing (www.summitracing.com). I don't remember which brand, but all the brands they offer are the same stuff. This stuff does not absorb moisture, which makes it an ideal solution for our needs. They sell it in 3-ft lengths. It has a slit down the length of it, so you simply cut a piece to match your needs and slip it on. I ended up installing a couple zip ties just to make sure it wouldn't come off by accident.

I went with rapz. Amazon. Much cheaper and uses velcro instead of zippers.

Do you need just the padding, or the cover, too? As Naked Jeeper said, pipe insulation from Home Depot would work fine. That's about all the factory stuff is anyway.

If you need the entire assembly, most of the offroad supply stores have a kit. Or if you're not concerned with it being new, there are a couple places on ebay that have junkyard take offs. Or check your local junkyard.

I'm no expert, but plenty here think Jerry B. is.. Read his posts about home depot pipe insulation vs rollbar padding...

That is not the type of roll bar padding that I'm referring to and is just as worthless as pipe insulation. If you can compress it with a few pounds of finger pressure, what kind of protection can it possibly provide when your skull slams into it at speed?

"If you've got a $50 dollar head, buy a $50 helmet" = "If you've got a $2 head, buy $2 pipe insulation for your roll bars."
