Mine came with a hardtop, and I now have a Rampage frameless top, so I am not 100% sure... but I was thinking they are maybe where part of a soft top frame mounts?
I can't help you, but glad I'm not the only one who is wondering this!! I've never had a factory softop so my best guess is they have something to do with the factory top. I've had a supertop that didn't use them, nor does my frameless top or hardtop.
My '99 doesn't have the factory soft top, but it does have what I believe is a Bestop Replace-A-Top and it uses those. It's where the soft top frame pivots as you raise and lower it.
After I bought my Jeep 7 years ago I stumbled upon a latch that bolts to the left wheel well. As the seat is folded up, one of the horizontal rods/pins in the seat lifts the latch which then closes over it, locking it upright. Flip a lever and it comes down again.
I'll be Damned if I can find it online or even a pic on the 'net.
Another solution is an expandable cargo rod from side to side in the tub to hold the seat up.
I know the latch that you're talking about but that only locks the forward hinge-pin into the bracket, it doesn't lock the seat up when it is folded and tumbled towards the front seats to open up the rear area for cargo.
This one does, Jerry. I'll try and post a pic if I remember how. My seat is out of the Jeep now, but when I fold it up, it stays up. I don't even know where I got it, it's been so long. Some aftermarket piece off the 'net.
I responded solely to your question which wasn't related to the OP's question... of course the OP's original post was already answered.
If you don't want something you posted as a question answered, don't post it as a question. Neither is it good form to reply as you did to an answer given in good faith.
If you're not serious about a question you ask, then make it clear you neither expect nor want an answer so we don't waste our time trying to help.
