Rolled the Jeep

Rolled my Jeep on the way to work yesterday. Driving about 35 mph, following a blizzard, hit a drift on the right side, when I came out, over corrected (of course), ended up going around entering the right ditch with with my left side, rolled over once, resting on the wheels, engine still running!

Thank you Jeep for the roll cage and seat belts, not a scratch or dent on me! Had to be winched out by the tow truck, drove her home. The hard top is history, left front fender is crinkled & flare is shattered, tail gate is crunched in. Didn't even break the mirror!

Taped plastic over the left rear and back window, drove it to work today. Has a wobble at about 60 mph, I think in the right rear. It was worse this morning, so hoping it is because of snow/ice packed in the wheel. She'll set now until Thursday when the insurance adjustor will come by to check her out.

Hope they don't total her. If they do, I'll probably buy her back. '98, turned 48,100 miles today.

Always wear your seat belt!

Glad to hear you are ok. Take it easy...odds are you will be hurting tomorrow.

Hate to ask but whenever you get a chance please post up pics.

I wouldn't worry about it being totalled out. I used to hate Jeep rollovers being the daggone things are near impossible to total. Now that I own one, and I'm not an adjustor anymore, I love 'em for that very reason.

As a general rule, the estimate would have to be about 75% of the NADA value of your rig (it depends on the state as to what constitutes a total loss). So long as the frame's straight, you should be just fine. Easiest way to spot frame damage is to look at the tub mounts (see if they're bent, not a guarantee of frame damage but rather an indicator that it could be present), and to look down the side of the body in places where no impact occurred. If you've got wrinkles, you might have frame damage. Then, even if you do, it's very often repairable.

In your case, I think it's pretty unlikely. Sounds like that back quarter and wheel took the brunt of it, and that's all relatively cheap and easy to fix.

Most importantly, glad to hear you're ok, and you live to wheel another day. Hit me up if you've got questions about anything the adjustor says.

just looked up the Wyoming salvage regs; since the rig is more than 8 years old, the 75% rule doesn't apply. It would have to cost less to total than repair for the insurance company to total it.

i.e., NADA book value - salvage value must be less than the cost of repairs for them to total it. Hope that helps.

Good to hear u are alright. There is something to be said for the Jeep rollcage. Even in stock form they are pretty tough. I guy here rolled his 97 @ 55 mph & walked away. The Jeep was totaled but could have been rebuilt fairly easily.

I'd rather see Jeep carnage than skull carnage.

I rolled my '78 CJ-5 at about 50mph with same results as you. Insurance total but bought it back. got new paint, windshield frame, tires and soft top. glad you're O.K. Seatbelt/rollbar saved my butt too. You ain't lived till you rolled a Jeep!

Glad you're alright Wyominer! Anything else but a Jeep and we'd probably be hearing about a memorial service. Good luck with the Jeep, hope it works out in your best interests.

just to reiterate what everyone else is saying.. glad your okay.

the hobble you notice in the jeep may be a bent wheel or maybe a tweeked axle housing. Nothing super serious. may not even be that bad. Get it aligned and balanced for sure though and get under there to look for cracks in the control arms or bent steering, etc

Thanks everybody. This will sound dumb, but getting out of bed the last 2 mornings were easier than the morning of the rollover (12/26)! No lower back or neck pain, must of re-aligned the old spine!

Got out and looked the Jeep over in the sun light. Body looks straight along both sides, didn't get under her, but the right rear wheel is half packed with snow, ice & gravel. Hope that takes care the wobble. I'll post pictures as soon as I get the wife's new camera figured out, etc.

I have had the joy of a corner to to corner (RF to LR) flip and then a barrel roll sliding on the drivers side down the road. Worst part was the windshield glass, was, and still is, everywhere. I am glad to know you are OK, but truly, get your jeep looked at before you drive it much. Put whatever spin you want on it, but if something is bent, half broken, whatever and it unloads on you at speed...........well, just be smart and safe.

Some pics of mine when it rolled. This jeep still lives, HP Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear. 42" irocs, your jeep will live on, if not by you then by someone who buys it and builds it.

I'm thankful that I have a RockHard roll cage in my TJ =)

My buddy rolled my GTI 4 times and then plowed into a few trees. It was certainly fun while it was happening.. but lets just say I cried that day after all the adrenaline was gone.

I don't have anything witty to put here
