If they total it and you are thinking of buying it back, to repair, or if they repair it. You should probably also think of replacing the main and rod bearings if it ran for more than a few seconds after it rolled over. Better to spend a little money now then to take a chance on the engine coming apart in the future because it ran without oil pressure.

not entirely sure that it is totaled but, I cant see how it wouldn't be, badly damaged hood, badly damaged both fenders, both doors, front roll cage bars, overall paint damage, grill damage, along with windshield.
LOL, everything on that list was replaced voluntarily on mine! LOL It aint totaled, roll that bitch over, get your check for the damage and get a Morris 4x4 or quadratec catalog and go forkin nutz....

I totaled my 99 tj (115k miles), 3 months ago today. Got t-boned and went up an embankment and rolled.
Both my insurance company (travelers) and thiers (nationwide) gave me quotes on the total loss. My jeep was mostly stock, but they took receipts for any work (even brakes) completed in the last 12 months. But it was only a prorated amount given (I think I got $7 for new brake rotors). Even my tranny rebuild ($1800 18 months ago) only netted me $200 additional.

I got just about $10k for everything. I was able to swap out what I could using their rule of thumb if no tools are needed.

It is your jeep until you send them the title. They will want to put it in a storage fee free lot. But do what's easiest for you. I would recommend that you get all personal effects from it. They cannot sell it to a junkyard until you sign it over. They wanted $1300 for me to buy it back. I passed and it went to auction and got $1500 or so (I watched the online auction).

For you and your wife. Don't be in a hurry to settle any medical claim. Make sure you get checked out. My symptoms didn't show up until 5 days later. I jumped my head on the roof in the rollover. I have cervical lordosis (loss of curve of my spine) and also get lightheaded very often. I went thru 8 weeks of phys therapy and still have issues. I cannot jog or walk fast anytime soon (was something that I enjoyed). Even riding a bicycle hurts after a while.

Take your time recovering. I hope neither of you experience what I am, but don't take the new pains and aches lightly.

Buy that sucker back, take the check and make the necessary repairs. If it's to messed up, just use the money to buy a nicer TJ and use your aftermarket parts. Part out the rest, or keep it for spare parts.

I too am covered by USAA and they have been great. Had a car stolen and they were more than fair. Have two boats, two houses and three cars with them.

Some mods are viewed as personal property so a few things you might get covered based on how much coverage your policy allows for personal property.

But if you spend a fortune on upgrades, there is no way you will get you money back since you were not paying to insure those items. You only get replaced what you claim to have owned which for most people is just the car itself.

if they give me a reasonable amount and it enough to be able to afford another tj AND buy mine back this is what i'll do ... if they don't give me money for my mods I will still buy it back but only to part it out, I will then purchase an xj or zj due to the cheaper initial purchase

I just have to wonder why the insurance company should pay for stuff like a hi lift jack and other bolt on stuff you can take off that is not damaged? Never saw a totaled hi lift before. Might have better luck being reasonable and not trying to get every dime you put in it back. JMO
I mean really, not trying to be a dick, but go back and look at your list of "mods". really? replace Ipod cable? D ring shackle?

X2

I'd look that list over and be careful what you send to the insurance, they won't pay for "tune up" stuff and maintenance items, not to mention some of the frivolous other items you put on that list..

Not true, they will reimburse a percentage of any servicing/maintenance provided within a certain amount of time (usually around 12 months). It may not amount to much, but it will be something

Why did the door fair better than the roll bar? New to Jeeps, but thought the roll bars were actually tougher than regular car frames in a roll. Maybe I'm missing something tho

That is why many guys install aftermarket cages that tie into the frame through the floorboards.

windshield frame pushed against the bar I guess .. the front bars on ths are notoriously weak ... the rest of the cage didn't budge partly due to the extra rigidity of the rockhard 4x4 harness bar

both axles were leaking fluid, along with the power steering box, and the front axle was pushed back , NO you didn't drive your jeep for 6 months if it was worse than mine

Part it out and buy a new one. If the front Axle was pushed back the frame is probably bent.

I've been looking into aftermarket seats, harnesses and a harness bar as my next mods. Think that they really saved you in this situation compared to the stock seatbelts?

they definitely didn't hurt , and I believe the harness bar kept my cage from twisting... and I would also upgrade the two bars that come from the windshield to the roll cage ... mine bent like a twig

Glad no one was hurt and I hope your insurance dealings work out better than mine did. I bought the Jeep in my avatar for my girlfriend paid a lil to much because it was really nice for its age, very low mileage and was exactly what my girlfriend wanted. 7 days later it caught on fire under the dash while she was driving to work and burnt to the ground. After what the insurance company gave me for it I calculated I lost $1,142 dollars per day of ownership
Thankfully my girlfriend was not hurt in the fire.
