Roof Rack on a hard top, How that workin?

I noticed a few of you have mounted roof racks directly to your hard top. How's that working for you?

I'm looking at doing the same thing and was just wondering what kind of experiences ya'll have run in to. Have they held up? How much weight have you tried to carry? That sort of thing.

Thanx in advanced for the replies

thanx...Ded N. Buried

Not sure if it was my jeep that you had seen since I have a set of rails on my hard top, but I am not running an OEM top. I have the Bestop 2 piece where the rails are used to store the front "targa" portion when it is off. Those rails can be purchased seperatley but I would def talk with Geoff first.

About a year ago I had a conversation with him about designing a similar style rail system for JKs to store their front panels but he stated that the OEM hard tops werent thick enough to support it. I am not sure if that is the case with OEM YJ/TJ hard tops but it wouldnt hurt to ask. Here is a basic pic of the bars I have from Quadratec but on a bestop 2 piece top.

I'm interested in the rails for the hard top. the weight capacity of the roof doesn't matter, I only want to use it for fishing poles.

I have the MBRP JK rack and I have the 4dr, now MBRP has the same rack for the 2dr JK's and the one drawback to it, is it comes off with the hardtop, makes it easier to remove the top, but then--NO RACK

So if you can live with that it's great, it'll hold in excess of 700 lbs and I've had mine close to a year--NO PROBLEMO

Checkemout

They now have a full rack (sections) and a light bar for the front section

Me too, I'm just wondering if there is a cheaper way, maybe use the rails from a cherokee or something, i see them for $50 on ebay

This Is what I want to build. Does it just seat on the roof? or does it go through it.... 3M tape will hold just about anything....

I certainly wouldn't trust just 3M tape to hold a rack on the top. I'd definitely bolt it down.

Not sure if it was here or at JU that had pics of someone who bolted a rack to the top, with bolts long enough to also rest against the sport bar for added support.
