Rough Country Lift

Now i have been online like crazy for the last couple weeks looking at cheap 4" lift kits and Rough Country seems like the way to go. It is only $500 and it has everything i need to lift my wrangler correctly. Plus, they have been around forever.

My only problem is that hanging out with you guys has made me think the kit is terrible. People are claiming that they are having to replace every part and things like that. I really dont want to be in that situation.

My questions are:

1) If i am mostly just a daily driver and baby my car too much to do any real off-roading, do you guys think the kit will do fine and i wont have to replace parts?

2) Are there any other cheap 4" Lifts that are under $700 that you guys could suggest instead?( I am only 17 and i dont think spending over $700 is an option)

Also, I have raised my budget to $800. I might reach for a superlift kit.

Rough Country spring suck... and that kit is only about half complete. The RubiconExpress kit is also incomplete for their springs.

If I were you on the budget that you are, I'd go for a 2" budget boost(like the SkyJacker version with Nitro shocks) and a 1.25" JKS body lift. That alone is enough clearance for 33" tires. That is only $400... with money left for other stuff, like a motor mount lift and/or more armor like a bumper or two.

I have heard many good things about rough country lifts. they are no skyjackers but still pretty damn good from what i have been told.

Oh man, search around here on this forum and you'll find just the opposite. Many of us (including myself) have had that lift with less than average results. Many of us have already moved on to better suspensions.

i recently have put in a rc 4" x-series lift. i'll say it doesn't do bad for a cheap lift. but i also threw aside half the kit and put in better stuff. the track bar brackets are junk. and remember if you go the 4" then plan on a slip yoke eliminator kit and double cardan driveshaft. your stock stuff won't work.

i also have the rc lift, you get what you pay for. mine stays on road 99% w/ occasional light offroad like level 1 trails. i enjoy it. i've got no complaints. honestly, everyone has an opinion about everything, you've got lovers and hater. in the end the choice is yours. gather as much info as you can and make your choice. but take any advise (good or bad) w/ a grain of salt.

the ride could be a little better, but it's a lifted jeep.

i have RC II.. it sucks.. First off, you have the shocks that are as stiff as shocks for race cars, next you have crappy springs that are also very stiff and cant flex for crap. The sock springs flexed better even though they were shorter..., third you have the crappy made control arms that do not allow any other movement than up or down along the bolt, then you have all the crappy brackets that bend, At last you have all the crappy parts together dipped in paint that rusts from the inside and eventually chips off.

About half a year since i installed it (no offroading at all), My shocks were rusting, the brackets were rusting, the joints on the control arms were also rusting, All the bolts they supply to you rust in no time from top to bottom, the springs sagged, etc.

I've had to replaced some of the junk they sent me... some bolts, the shocks.... i called them about the springs.. they sent me 4 brand new springs that are currently collecting the dust in my closet, they said the old ones sagged because of a bad batch of metal. Also i talked to them about the control arms because the bushings are very hard.. they blamed it on a bad batch of rubber for all of them.. so they sent me 16 brand new bushings that are the same as the old ones.. lol.. i wont even mess with it.. When it brakes, i'll replace it with something better.

I think that sums it all up


Oh and also i forgot to add, i bought mine from JcWhitney.. i posted a review about the lift very similar to above and they sent me a msg saying if i was unhappy to call them. Which is why they replaced the springs and bushings but anyways i posted a review that they DID get.. is my review on there? NO.

the rust is going to happen especialy in the snow/salt belt of the midwest. this lift (IMO) is not a serious off road lift. if you want an offroad lift you spend alot more.
the old addage of building anything mechanical on a budget applies heer:

cheap
reliable
fast (or offroad capable)

Its not even a street lift bud

It might be nice for an autoshow though where the cars are stored in a vacuum atmosphere.

i understand that. while your point on the lift is valid in your opinion, my thaught is you shouldn't put a strike against something that by it's nature will happen, like metal rusting. i understand your issue w/ rough country and the so call worksmanhsip. i myself would be upset to. but anyway, let get back to topic. tenshots1, you got more infor for you brain. add it to what ever you learn and run with it brother.

I ran that kit, some parts are still on (springs) the jeep. Its CRAP!!! My issue was not with rust either. Face it, once you lift it you will wheel it at some point. The shocks were crap, the CA's are so rigid they destroy the bushings within a few months, and that was with light wheeling on a few trails. All that force is transferred to the CA brackets. The DPA and dropped TB bracket at the axle is just perfect for severe bumpsteer. The TB relocation brackets at both axles constantly loosen up on their own causing death wobble. Other than that its a great kit, buy it!

Its weird, Ive had it for about a year and I havent had any of the problems you guys are having. No busted bushings, no bumpsteer, no death wobble, no issues with relocation brackets, no rusting. The shocks are total sh** though. No doubt about that. I hope I didnt just jinx myself.

i am just a daily driver that goes off-roading probably 10 times a year. All i want is a basic kit that will handle well and look good on the road

Ok, so mostly you guys hate it. I have placed it as a last resort. What are some other kits that you could suggest?

Remember, i dont need much flexing or anything. I just want a very simple, reliable kit that will do the job

I have seen on JF that the newer RC lift is doing pretty good. When I went with mine, there really was no cheap 4" lift. I believe in buy once, so I saved and went with OME/JKS from DPG Offroad. Great onroad ride, very good offroad performance for my wheeling style. Since my Jeep is mainly ONroad, onroad comfort was important to me.

You may be able to do a mix/match setup with OME shocks, RE springs, etc. But a BB is a good low-cost alternative. I'd just go with the 2" spacers, but run OME shocks vs Skyjacker. The shocks may be a bit more, but the ride should work well. Should you decide to get rid of the BB, you can keep the good OME shocks, and add the proper OME or RE springs and still be doing it right. Sell off the BB spacers for darn near what you paid for em so you'd have minimal wasted cost.

1" Body lift is hardly noticeable. Many, MANY people here run one. TinyTerror is running a set up very similar to this.

The one thing a 4" lift brings along is a needed SYE and CV Driveshaft... which can run you another $400. I was just offering another way to get the height you want.

Another option would be a Full-Traction 3" lift and a 1" body lift. I know you said no body lift, but 1" is nothing really.
