Round LED taillights... Reverse?

I have been looking at the round flush led taillights for my 99 TJ but I was wondering what you guys are doing for reverse?

I have LED's on my sportruck and I have plenty of things to worry about on inspection that reverse is the last of my worries but I dont know if I want to deal with that with the DD also.

Let me know what you guys are doing!

For reverse lights, you can do a number of things. I have seen fog lights used. My neighbor and I both have LED trailer lights. I used a cheap set of white led strip lights (2 row of 8 LEDs each) and have them mounted in the body lift gap between the tub and bumper. My neighbor used white driving lights mounted on his custom bumper.

Here's a pic of what I ended up doing. The reverse light is below the back door.

Just drilled two holes with a hole saw for the rounded edges and then cut the straights to connect them.

What about the light on the license plate? I know in CA you can't get away without it.

Many people do the Light bolts for that...I believe they are for Motorbikes...but basically it has a LED in the bolt, which shines down onto the plate.

You can also buy a license plate light at auto parts house, but they don't look as clean as the light bolts IMO.

And they work really well. I installed them when I did my LED taillight conversion. I recommend them to anyone wanting to do this mod....

Here's a pic.

that License plate mod is awesome.

I may just have to do that. Every time I see it I say "that looks cool".

Have any night pics of the bolts all lit up?

I use Light'n Boltz for the license plate. O'Reilly's cheapo fogs for the reverse on the tire carrier. Activated through the reverse circuit OR a switch on my dash.

Another option is the ORO LiteDOTS with integrated reverse LED's. But I wasn't willing to pay that price!

I don't. I'll see what I can do about getting one. Glad you like the mod. It's super easy.

Do any of the OEM holes in the tub line up? Or must you drill 4 new holes?

I assume you access the inner aspect of the tub from underneath to put nuts on bolts?

I had to drill 4 new holes to get the tag exactly where I wanted it. In the pic it looks like it's touching the bottom of the LED taillight. It's just the camera angle. There's about .75" of clearance between the taillight and the top of the tag.

As for accessing the back of the bolts, yeah, I just pulled the wheel well liner open to get to them. Very easy. My Jeep is wired for a trailer, so I had an existing ground point right on the frame, just behind where the tag mounts. That made it very easy to do the install. Otherwise you'd need to make your own ground point on the frame. Simple stuff.

Right on, I haven't done flush tail lights yet, I was considering doing the license plate first.

I figure when I finally wash it, I'll yank the OEM plate mount, and wash/wax all that area as well, then do the plate mounting once its clean and waxed.

Then I'll have to decide if I want to do the Flush tails. I like them, but I'm still kicking that idea back and forth.(kinda a PITA to have to add separate reverse, etc.)

I'm kicking around some ideas for reverse lights, but I'm not really caring much that I don't have them yet. I never paid much attention to my reverse lights when I had them. I've got 18% tint all around, so I couldn't see them very well when I had them. Some people will say "But Cave, your reverse lights also help other people to know you're in reverse!" Why do people need to know what gear I'm in? Could I get a concrete example where someone's life/death depends on knowing what gear I'm in? Probably not.

I actually completely agree, I figure its just one more hurdle to jump over when getting it inspected...I'm too lazy to jump hurdles any more.

Exactly. Lite'n Boltz work like a champ.

Since I don't have a tire carrier or 3rd brake light any more I basically wired the lite'n boltz to the 3rd brake light connectors that touch when you close the back door. Then, under the passenger rear corner, I rewired the 3rd brake light lines to run off the parking lights. That way when you turn on your lights and close the door the license plate lights come on. (can take pics if ya like)

Works just fine

Texas does inspections that include reverse lights? Kansas doesn't do ANY kind of inspection other than a VIN lookup when registering a vehicle from another state. Very liberating!!

I use the ORO LED Tails.
They're not flush, but only stick out about 1/2".
They use the existing stock mounting holes,
and I found them to be a nice alternative to the flush mount style
because you don't have to drill out that huge hole in the tub.
That way, if you ever want to go back to stock lights,
or change to another type of light in the future that uses the stock holes...
no problem.

The ORO's have 12 White LED's that are dedicated to Reverse.
This is a nice feature that will keep you in compliance with the law,
as well as the 3 Red Marker LED's on the outer side of each light.

Here's some more info on the lights,
and a write up of the install:
(ORO also sells a license plate for this set up, and that's included in the write up)

Google Image Result for http://www.4x4xplor.com/images/ORO-LiteDOTs/DSC00147.jpg

As for Reverse,
I use a set of KC Highlites 55w Back-Ups.

That is pretty neat, but another Jeep on this board has two mounted bottle openers.
