Rusty frame advice

I need some advice folks. I recently discovered that the frame of my 97 TJ is starting to rust pretty heavily around the drivers side body mount; so much so that I feel like it is bordering on unsafe. There is also a spot on the passengers side around the drain hole just in front of the body mount. I took it to a welder today and they said $560 to fix. Does that sound right?

I have no experience welding so I can't do it myself. I'll try to post some pics tonight. It definitely needs to be fixed.

Any advice? experience?

Thanks!

First off, give your frame a thorough looking over. See if there are any more problem areas. If so it might be time for a frame swap. As for the price, hard to answer as I don't know the extent of the work needed. Pics would help..

Here's some pictures of the drivers side frame rust.

$560 doesn't sound terrible. If you keep it, make sure to coat that with Por-15 or the other one the military uses (can't think of the name of it right now).

I'm going to get another quote today. I'm worried once they get in there to fix it things will be worse than they look on the outside.

If I were you I'd get under there with a big screw driver and poke the heck out of those areas to see if they are perforating. The pics are good, but I dont think you can tell how much damage is going on until you gouge into those areas. I ended up paying 500 to have some reinforcing places welded on last year on my 98. The rear shackles were junk.... but it seems fine now.

After, I hosed out the inside of the frame and squirted an Eastwood product internally....its some nasty green stuff that claims to infuse the whole interior of the frame with a rust proof coating. Its too early to tell how well it really works, but it seemed to give great coverage.

Later this fall, I'll take on the out side of the frame with Chassis saver.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I had a guy buy her from me this afternoon. Very bittersweet. Hopefully he'll treat her right and she'll return the favor. I didn't think I'd be so sad about it, but I've been moping around all night. I guess when you spend ten years with some(thing) you get attached.
