S*ittybilt rear tire carrier

So I got a Smittybilt rear tire carrier / bumper on the cheap. thing rattles like crazy at highway speeds. I mounted it using grade 8 bolts, washers, and lock nuts an it's still all over the place. Any suggestions for keeping it quiet / nude control? Other than taking it off an eBay'ing it?

Nope. I looked at the new ones last week in Nashville and decided that nothing Smittybuilt is going on my Jeep.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have commented on the crappy quality of the junk coming from China like Smittybilt imports and sells. I don't think Smittybilt makes anything here any more. Smitty himself would be rolling in his grave if he knew his company was now mostly a front-name for Chinese crap. All this said in strictly my personal opinion naturally.

I basically got it for free so I'd like to figure out a way to keep it quiet. I agree tho. Won't be spending any of my cash on their crap!

I have one on my jeep and its been holding a 35 just fine. I welded the bumper on in easy locations to cut it off IF i needed to...could be the reason I'm not having any issues out of it

So far its been nothing but good to me and ive taken it on the trails a few times...

The bumper itself is firmly mounted, it's the upper portion that wiggled forward and back (a lot!) anything I can do other than tighten the bolts on the sleeve that attach swing away portion to the post?

If you got it that cheap then the only fix I see is sell it, make a few bucks, and put the money towards a better one.

If its the older ones with the red latch style then its the actually swing away which is floppy.

The newer smittybuilt is pretty rugged and has a hefty handle and lock, but still I'd but another brand.

Even the new ones are that cheap Chinese steel the problem is that it is weak and won't hold it's shape. I think the only thing it's good for is AK's and woks

I agree lol, Im just saying they did make a better latch but the quality is still much lower then practically any other brand. But for free, I would of taken it.

I juts need to rig up a better latch. I traded a beat down old air compressor, a tool box I didn't need and $100 for a warn rock crawler front bumper and this Smitty rear. The front alone was worth the deal.. So I'll make the best of this poo-ish rear.

Damn. I was really liking that XRC front bumper by Smitty. Looks pretty good as well. Any other good alternatives that look similar???

I think the OR Fab front bumper with built in stinger and winch mount is SHARP. D-ring mounts are welded in as well. Their front bumpers are also stubby style, so it helps with clearance.

That steel isn't even good for AKs. I own a few AKs and NONE of them are the Chinese JUNK AKs. If you're into AKs, you already know that Chinese AKs are crap. If you aren't into AKs, but are wanting to know more about them, just know NOT to buy a Chinese AK. Buy Romanian or Yugoslavian, but not Chinese....(mine are all Romanian)

I'll never buy Smittybilt anything. Nothing but junk. I bought a locking glovebox from them and it showed up bent like a pretzel and the mounting hardware scattered everywhere in the box. The box was fine so it wasn't the delivery guys fault.

I'm pretty sure I got the same rear bumper and carrier as you and I had that problem to. I just put a piece of rubber where the carrier latches to the bumper. I also used a tie down at one point to secure it to my bumper more but got tired of having to take it on and off. If I had to do it over again I would have just got the Waren bumper/carrier cause the smitty built one sucks. Even the swing way is so tuff to open up that it take your full body wieght to open it up. Try my tip casue it worked for me.
