Exclamation Scary Vibrations

Hey guys the first time my TJ went off-roady on the way back into town I noticed some vibrations in my feet, at first I thought it was maybe some dirt coming off. But it persisted the rest of the way home, the only way to get rid of it was to mash the gas pedal. Today I went to pick my brother up and I noticed it when maintaining speed, and this time I could feel it in the wheel and the seat. It got a little bit scary when I decelerated, you could hear it and the vibrations got more violent, you could really feel it. It was like I was driving some really knobby tires of pavement but I have stock tires on them. Whats going on!!!!

Nope, no mud. I checked for that when I got home. Im starting to get a tad worried, wondering if I should take it into a shop and get it checked out

I'm guessing mud in wheels throwing off balance or it could be your u-joints. The u-joints were my problem.

Is it the dreaded death wobble? I had the same thing happen to me. I took mine wheeling and some parts came a little loose which I had to replace. Mine started out as a small vibration in the pedal and wheel then got EXTREMELY worse.

I have no idea if its death wobble, mine also started out as a small vibration in the pedal and floor now its like a massage chair (a little bit of an over-exaggeration) and I can feel it in the wheel, not to mention I can hear it.... What all did you have to replace? And please take note that yesterday was the first time Ive experienced it in almost a month

Have you had your tires rebalanced since the off road trip? You could have knocked a weight or 2 off

Also try the dry steering test to see if you have any loose or worn parts

The unbalanced tires was a slick thought, but no I dont think its that. It seems too inconsistent to be the tires, I really only feel it around 2000rpm (give or take 300) and during braking/deceleration. I'll try the test though, thanks

Well it doesn't sound like death wobble then. I'd agree with the others then on the U-joints. Mine still get a small vibration but they aren't shot, just need replaced sooner or later. My experience was awful and thought I was gonna wreck every time I went over 40-45mph. I replaced the tie rod ends, upgraded the steering stabilizer, adjustable trac bar, got the wheels rebalanced, and an alignment.

Jeez you just went all out eh? And I thought my experiences were really funny cause everybody talks about hitting a certain speed while for me its when Im braking and downshifting to slow down or when Im maintaining my speed while doing around 2000rpm. But for sure, as soon as school starts and I can get into the mechanics shop Ill be tearing 'er apart. Without a doubt new u-joints will be put in, Ill try and coax dad into a performance steering stabilizer (either rancho or skyjacker, anyone have a preference?) and if that doesnt work Ill look into extreme measures such as new tie rod ends and a track bar adjustment. Any other suggestions?
