securing softtop by the tailgate

Hey guys, AS some of you have seen I just recently purchased a 2004 rubicon. I was wondering how the proper way to attach the softtop to the rear by the tailgate is? I have it under the lip and it holds but leaks pretty bad at the car wash so I am not sure I have it on correctly.

thanks guys.

You have the tailgate bar attached at the tub rails, right? And the sail panels clipped under the rail? Automatic car washes are NOT recommended for soft tops, one cause they force water in around the back window, and two because the wax they use can cloud the plastic windows, and three because the force of the water on the top and windows just isn't a good idea. You can do the wand wash, and be more diligent about where the spray is going. Or just wash it with a bucket at home, it takes like 10 minutes to wash and dry a Wrangler, there's so little to them...

there should be a bar with a gasket at the bottom of rear top. tailgate closes against the gasket.

correct. There is a bar that runs the length of the rear window. it should fit into some metal connections on the left and right side (nothing in the middle). The bar itself should be connected to the bottom of the rear window.

There should be a bar that is attached to the rear window that snaps into these on both sides, then the tailgate shuts creating a "seal" as far as Jeep seals go

I was in a hurry and the top had been in storage for a year and a half so it was really dirty.

If you are talking about the pieces that are screwed to the tub, on a TJ they are metal. And they are mounted to the outside of the tub. I have no clue what they are called tho', tailgate retainer clips or somesuch maybe. This isn't the best pic, or drawing, but maybe you'll get the idea...
