Sell My 2 Piece Hardtop -- Back to Softop

Had my jeep a few years, and when I got it, was just dying to get a hardtop on it. But worried if I got a solid 1 piece, I'd never take it off. Popped big time money for the Bestop 2 piece hardtop. Seriously thinking of selling it on craigslist and going back to a softop. Am I nuts?

Thinking about the Bestop® Supertop® NX Soft Top. Suggestions? Opinions?

Okay, so I decided to sell the top, and if it sells, get a sailcloth soft top. Listed it on Craigslist at $1500 -- since I paid $3000 for this top (all told) I am really hoping it makes at least the $1500!

why not both? I'm sure you dropped 3 grand on a top for a reason!

I did. I thought if it was a solid 1 piece, I'd be too lazy to ever take it off, and I like driving with the top off when the weather permits -- so I thought if I had a 2 piece hardtop, I would at least take the front half off, and I do. I like it that way, except, it squeaks. A lot. It makes more noise, continuously, than my soft top ever did. We tried moving it, adjusting it, loosening the brackets, tightening the brackets, lubing it ...no difference. It just squeaks. And if I don't sell it, I won't have any money to buy the soft top -- I'm a sap sometimes, I gave the old top AND THE HARDWARE away when I got the hardtop! LOL

I had the 2 piece hard top and I hated it. I'd keep it though if I were you and use it in the winter time. Run a soft top, or bikini top which is way cheaper, in the spring summer and fall... Just my .02

Curious ... what did you hate about it? Did it squeak like the styrofoam lid on an ice chest from the 1960's? LOL I don't mind anything else about it, its well made, carpeted on the inside, have never had a problem with leaks, even in Oregon where it was raining cats & dogs. But that squeak just kills me! LOL

Mine didn't squeak. I just didn't like the design... Like other people posted, once I took it off I ended up leaving it off for months at a time, and after I put it back on I would leave it on for months... I like my soft top now, both my Jeeps have soft tops. I pulled the doors and windows out of my TJ and I leave the rest of the top up for shade, I like that a whole lot better.

This is how I roll now:

I have never driven with my doors off. I see so many people on there that do, and some have said "why are those doors on your jeep, take em off!" LOL I don't have any real desire to take them off, but I suppose that could change. Everybody said "you don't need a hardtop" but I thought I did. And now I think I have joined the "soft top is all I need" crowd. If I take the top off, I know it will sit forever taking up space ... and I can use the money to pay for a new top. Plus, lots of people on here have said how quiet the sailcoth top is ... so maybe best of both worlds? Some quiet, but a full top down ride fairly easily?? Now if only someone buys it. I put it at $1200 rather than $1500, but its probably the wrong season, its sunny and warm! LOL If it was raining I bet I would get more interest! ROFL

Used hard tops in my area go for about $500-700 dollars... so try not to get mad when you get some lowball offers... You can get a nice bikini top for like $75, and a windshield channel to use with it for about $35, then you could keep your hard top, or you might have better luck posting in the barter section and trading for a soft top and all the bracketry to go with it.

Wow, seriously? When I was looking for a hardtop I could not find a used one for less than $1000, not matter the age of the top, and they usually sold in a day. There were actually a couple of "hard top wanted" posts on Craigslist at the time that I find annoying, since I was looking too! LOL

I could take $1000 for it and still get what I want, much less than that and you are correct, I'd be better off keeping it and just getting something else instead of a new sailcoth soft top. Cross my fingers someone wants it.

Good luck! You live in an area that has a lot more hard core Jeepers than I do so prices will varry I'm sure.

Poor condition soft tops in my area go for about 700-900. I'm sure a top of the line good condition top should get some pretty good money. But you're right, probably the wrong season to sell.

How quiet is this top? Does it leak? I read that the 2-piece hard tops did not have a good seal from wind and rain.

Have had no issues with leaking, even in Oregon where I go frequently (and where it rains frequently). I think I get a decent amount of wind noise from right at the windshield, or at least that is where it sounds like it comes from. Looked like the front piece stuck out an eighth of an inch over the windshield, so I had the top adjusted so it was flush, but I don't really notice whether the wind noise got any better. I can say the wind noise was louder than I expected, but never having driven in a jeep with a hardtop before, I cannot say whether its too loud or if they are all this loud?

@josh Here's a link to the ad (that is allowed, isn't it?) -- pictures not the best because I took them with the jeep in the garage at work so poor light, I should reshoot them outside so I can get better shots.

People think I'm crazy for selling my hardtop. Sold it on Craigslist for $650 and bought a Rampage top for $300 and couldn't be happier. Not to mention I don't have to deal with all the spiders that were living inside the top.

I have both a hard top and a safari top for my TJ. I like the hard top, since I live in the PNW, we have bad weather 10 months out of the year and I like the quietness and protection the hart top has to offer. I just pull it off durring the 2 months of summer, and throw the half doors on and am good to go. I think you should keep your hard top and buy a safari top.

I don't, but can easily take some. Someone from Craigslist is coming to look at it tonight. If he does not buy it, I will repost some better pics this weekend.
