Selling my TJ

Ok, I'd love some input from the TJ crowd. Or, if you're interested in buying, let me know.

Mainly I'd like to know what you think it's worth. I have it priced at 7k on Craigslist, but I think that's a bit high.

Here's the ad:
1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sport 4.0L

You can look at the ad for a list of upgrades or mods I've made.

Here's a list of issues, because I'm trying to be as up front as possible about things that would require a new owners attention:

There is rust on the frame, not a small amount, but nothing that currently threatens integrity
Small drip leak from front and rear diffs
Needs new heater core
Paint is not pristine, has some sun spots, fenders are primed black, rust hole in one fender
Missing front sway bar links (Yea, I drive like that, gotten used to it)
Front facing vents in dash do not blow air
Shocks probably need replaced

What do you think she's worth? PM me if your in my area and want to make an offer (central PA).

Thanks!

I think you should list that stuff in the ad. People tend to get pissed when they find out stuff is missing or doesn't work when it isn't in the ad.

That said, I always list a vehicle for a little more than I actually want for it. This leaves room for haggling and makes people feel more like they got a good deal!

When contacted I tell people strait up. They're going to see it anyway when they take a look at it.

Thoughts on value?

The needed repairs will turn off lots of potential buyers, and most of them could be fixed by you for a couple hundred dollars and make it much more sellable. The heater core will be the big problem though; either spend a day replacing it or pay a mechanic big $$$ to do it. But the people who are interested in it now will be expecting a big discount for buying a jeep with lots of small problems so they can clean it up and turn it for a profit.

Thanks, this exactly the kind of response I was looking for.

I have an offer of 4000 from someone who's seen it and driven it. Was thinking of trying to push them to 4500.

Believe it or not, dealer will trade in for 3k.

Hi I'm from central PA to and about 2 months ago I bought a 97 sahara 4.0 auto tranny with 137k on it for 4700. It came with a new bikini top half and full doors and a hard top. It is in very good condition for its age and I didn't have to do any repairs of any kind to it.

Nice looking Jeep! Sounds like you got a pretty good deal too, thanks for the feedback.

I would like to find that kind of deal here in the Kansas City area.

Listed at 7000 with those issues I'd browse right past it. I anticipate folks listing their stuff higher then they expect by maybe 10-20%. 40% is a bit much. Just my $0.02 good luck with sale it looks like a nice jeep.

I got very lucky. I was on Craigslist daily for months and I just happened to be the first one to call about it. He said he had like 9 other calls and a dozen or so texts after I called. He was asking 5 for it and we made a deal at 4700. Keep searching and you will find one. You just have to be looking all the time. I know I was starting to get sick of it but then there it was. Good luck

The $7k price doesn't seem outlandish to me. Jeep prices must be very regional (and seasonal) in their fluctuations. When I was shopping this summer, I would have jumped on your ad. Good luck

7k is KBB value for one in great condition. No mechanical issues, very little rust, body in great shape. With all of the things you listed plus the fact that KBB is a guide and people will always try to get it for less I think you've got it priced high.

I bought my 97 sport 4.0L manual last month for 3k. The body has rust in two spots, both smaller than a quarter (a hinge and hiding under where the hood rests), no sun spots, nothing mechanically wrong with it. The frame has rust but it's all surface rust and is still solid as a rock. Admittedly, I feel like I stole it for 3k. Talked him down a bit but not anywhere near 7k.

It looks like a solid TJ so you shouldn't have any trouble selling it. Just realize with the work needed you need to come down a bit. Good luck

THIS!

Remove the offroading pics. It's a Jeep, everyone knows what it can do but they don't need pics of what you did.

Fix the minor BS as others have said and you should command 6k I bet.

As it sits now, I'd say 4-5k is about right.

I'm not really sure what you're referring to as minor BS, but I have taken the constructive feedback and revised the posting.

Thanks to all who provided feedback, I really appreciate it!

yeah, I would highly suggest fixing the little things like shocks, sway bar links, spray paint the fender flares black and fix the heater core. Sure, it'll take a little time and a little money, but then your jeep doesn't have a huge lift of stuff "wrong" with it. Even though the things are not major, the "imagine" it gives off for a potential buyer is "wow, he can't even manage to put sway bar links on it? imagine what else he has ignored or not taken care of". I'm not saying that's how you are with your jeep, but that's def the image that your ad can give. Also, you should have about 10 more photos if you are trying to sell a car. Every ad should have a pic from each corner of the vehicle, the engine bay, close up of tires, close up of suspension, a couple pics of the inside, a pic of the odometer, pics of any special add ons, and then of course pics of any problem areas, in your case, the rust. But, these are just my opinions... but i have bought and sold a shit ton of vehicles and have great success with it using the above advice.

also, if it helps at all, i just bought a socal 97 tj, 82000 miles, one owner, all stock with a bikini top for 6. Rust free and in great mechanical condition. Only thing i "had" to do (and only "had" to do it because i do car detailing on the side) is compound and polish the paint.... but i would do that on any vehicle i bought. I have since gone through and done maintenance, but that is for peace of mind.

That would be great, actually!

I'm also going to replace heater core, as well as shocks and the other fixes that are needed, that's good advice. She has been well cared for otherwise; fluids changed regularly, tire rotation, regular maintenance. I have some time before I can let go of it anyway since I just ordered my new Jeep.
