Selling my TJ to buy another TJ

I have a 2003 SE. I like it a lot, but I am moving to where there are more hills, and more crime. Mine is a 4 cylinder with a soft top so its not the best where I will be moving. I have been looking for a 6 cylinder with a hard top and think I found one that fits my needs. 1997 jeep wrangler sport

If I can get some opinions on this 97, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

How many miles on your TJ? You might be better off buying a hard top. You can buy security boxes for valuables. Good luck!

Just under 73,000. I thought about just buying a hard top but I really don't have the money for it. Blue Book value on mine is over $11,000 so if I sell it and buy a cheaper Jeep I will have money to live before I find a solid job.

Does anyone know when the timing belt should be changed on the 4.0L? Is that too many miles for me to be interested in buying it?

You will be much happier with the 4.0L than the 2.5L.

150k isn't to high, but trading a vehicle for double your current mileage probably isn't the best thing. It's a pretty good price, but with the high mileage and the lift and tires. Where did this guy go. Ask if it has a d44. That would sweeten the deal. If he has a good service record it could be worth it as the I6 is know to last a long time.

Just bought a True Hi9 rear and a D44 front, both with ARB's and 4.88 gears!! Check out the build!

He said it has always been garage kept and there is no rust on it. And that he has only gone to Gormon a couple times for light trail use. I am going to look at it tomorrow morning, is there anything I should look out for?

I got mine for just a little more than that. My 02 6 cyl was $8500 and came with the 5 inches of total lift, 35's, d44, was regeared and had a brand new Jasper put in 5 years ago.... After looking at similar rigs for sale I think I got a heck of a deal

I'm sure if I had time to wait I would be able to find a newer one, but I start my part time job in Oakland in 3 weeks from today so I kinda gotta find something quick.

Check for the D44, check that it can move into 4wd HI and LOW. Take it up to speed and feel for vibrations and shimmys. If the steering wheel vibrates, I would walk away. Check steering linkage and look for a SYE. Look for oil acumilating between the oil pan and transmission. That is the sign of a rear main seal leak that is common on the 4.0L. $300-500 job, you can drive around with it leaking a little as mine has always done that and I just haven't done anything about it yet. There is a long list of things to check for that I am to lazy to list right now and will wait for others to fill in the blanks for me.

I picked up my 03, I6 with D44, 2.5" lift and 31", soft top with 56k for $9k

Where are you selling yours? You might want to check how much your really gonna get before you start shopping for a new one.

Custom Rock Crawler 4X4 Jeep
You should get this one, though he will probably want $25-30k

1997 jeep wrangler 50k original miles
You can probably get this guy down to $8300

1985 JEEP CJ7
Or move to a CJ! Saw a hard top for a CJ on there for 700-800 too.

I paid less than that for an 01 sport with a dana 44 & 20K less miles. If time is on your side I'd wait.

Decided against this one. Only had a d35 and it does seem like a bit much for that many miles. Thanks for all the help. I'm sure I'll have another question about another Jeep I look at. So thanks in advance

I just bought a 2000 I6 lifted d44 arb locker, all new drive train yadda yadda yadda. I sold my 2001 se 4 banger. Best move I made on a jeep. You will be much happier with the 4.0. My best advice is to be patient and look in other cities as well, you might find a killer deal 500 miles away, good luck

Maybe there are some options for you on CL up in NorCal?? This one, for instance is a 59k '99. Says it needs a new manifold, but is asking $7,500...

1999 Jeep wrangler 4x4 automatic 4.oL 59k

Just a thought.

R

EDIT: Sorry, just realize that one is also a soft top, but the option still applies. I'd probably want a hardtop in Oakland, too.

Yeah I feel a lot safer parking on the street with a hard top. I have a feeling the soft top windows would get slashed within the first week. Thanks for looking out though

I live in a shitty part of town. I have never had any of my jeeps messed with. Don't leave valuables in the jeep, don't lock the doors. I have my hood chained down to prevent theft of a battery or my arb compressor. I also have a worthless club on it. Make it as hard as possible to steal and also, good insurance is essential.

I would keep the one you have... I live near oakland, need to just take care of yourself.. If it was me, I would just keep the one you have, just don't leave anything in it! I live the summer with top & doors off, just don't leave anything in it! Also, insurance! Plenty of good wheelin' around here, you will have a good time! Pm me, we can go wheelin'!

I really appreciate all the help and advice. I lived at the place that I am moving back into for 4 years. I have seen a lot of shady things go down. A hard top is a must for living in this area. I would love to be able to have the top and doors off a lot but I don't want a tranny hooker pooping in my Jeep. And yes I have seen that happen to my friends van. Is Progressive good enough insurance?

easy solution... leave the windows out or leave it unlocked lol i have only locked mine 1 time, right after i drove it away from the dealer i went to stoped at a denys on the way home and locked it, then found out that my key doesnt work to unlock it from the outside lol, good thing you can unzip the windows from the outside lmfao, after i realised this i just dont leave anything other than recovery gear in mine

1997 jeep wrangler 50k original miles

Super low miles, looks completely stock too. A little higher than I want to spend but it looks super clean
