Serpentine belt smoking?

1997 TJ Sahara, 4.0L, manual trans.

I had the serpentine belt replaced a few weeks ago and today I got home and noticed this putrid smell coming from my engine. Hmm, I open the hood and smoke is coming from the belt right where it wraps around the A/C compressor pulley. I checked to see if the belt was loose, it wasn't. Although I noticed there is absolutely no play whatsoever in the belt. Then I checked to see if all the pulleys were spinning, which would cause a lot of friction, thus the smoke, nope. They're all spinning fine. Help? Sorry for the poor video quality.

Did you have the AC on?

It's possible the AC pulley is fine, but the compressor is siezed, so that when the clutch engages, the pulley stops spinning.

Negative ghostrider. A/C was off. I have an leak in the A/C line somewhere and it's cool up here in the mountains so I don't need it.

Maybe the AC pulley bearings are shot? Try removing the belt and spinning the pulley by hand?

I loosened it up just a tad and let it run for a few mins and I didn't smell what I was smelling earlier. C., I did notice a little bit of black stuff dripping out of the bottom of the compressor when I got home earlier.

Unhappy

Looks like it's time for a new a/c compressor clutch, it just took a dump on you. you will soon be taking your doors off to keep cool.

you say you did not have the AC on, did you by chance have the heat/defrost going-it will also run your compressor. any setting that also runs your defrost will run it.

you may also want to make sure the grooves on the belt and some of the pullys are centered and lined up since you say it's a new belt-maybe they didn't put it on quite right

I flipped it on (defroster) for a second this morning. I finally got my brother to call me back (ASE certified mechanic) and he thinks the inside of the A/C compressor like you said 'took a dump on me.' So what I plan on doing is getting a new serpentine belt w/o AC and routing it around that pulley until I absolutely need A/C. Won't that pulley seize up and leave me stranded if it goes? Oh, I don't really need A/C up here, it's nice and cool most of the year.
