Shifting problems, need a question answered

I have a 2000 TJ, yesterday got in to go to work, pulled out, stopped at the sign at the end of my street, and the trani wouldn't catch. in any gear, even reverse. no noise and i didn't feel a thing, but it wasn't catching at all. Today I took out the center console, outer boot, inner boot, floor pan cover, and when i finally took out the shifter itself and reset it, i found that was the problem; the shifter knob is slipping out of its hole in the linkage. my question is why, and what can i do about it?
