Short Bus ressurection

Well, a month ago I got into a wreck in the TJ. Had a tire blow(from what I can tell. I can't remember any of it), swerved into a guard rail ran up it, front axle hit it, momentum turned the jeep 180* and flopped it onto the drivers side and it slid for a good 20 feet.
Well, trying to avoid raised insurance rates and possibly being dropped for having totaled my YJ a little over a year ago, I decided to not tell insurance and fix it myself. I'm starting this thread to log all my progress and allow you guys to follow along. Since I'm doing this myself and I'm only a 21 year old not making too much money, I'm doing this as cheap as I can. I already got a buddy giving me front upper and lower control arms, trac bar, and a front axle for a whopping $20. All the axle needs is shafts which I'll be taking from my current axle and swapping over my aussie locker as well. Next weekend I'm picking up a t-case that I'm trading my bass guitar, a video game, and $35 for.
Pretty much all I need now is tie rod and drag link. There wasn't much body damage except some scrapped off paint, a little tear in the top, front drivers fender bent pretty bad, dent in the rear corner, and the door got messed up and the window isn't in the channel thing but I'll figure a way to fix that hopefully. Ok, enough of my babbling, time for pics.

A lot of pics for sure. You are a brave man to tackle all of this. What happens when you "fix" everything and the frame is off by an inch vertically and/or horizontally???

Its better, and probably in the long run, cheaper than telling my insurance and having a huge rate hike and possibly being dropped.
I took some measurements and from what I can tell the frame is straight. If the frame is off, well, I'll find someone to straighten the frame or just deal with it. As long as everything fits, works properly, and drives down the road straight, I'm fine with it.

Or just whip out the BFH and give it a few whacks to straighten it.

You should ALSO look into local/state ordinances. MOST states require reporting of ANY accident that causes more than $X of damage..... and as you have already posted this.... it would be hard to deny you DID it......

Hmm, never thought of that. I'll look into it. With or without this it would be hard to deny this happened since the police and rescue crews showed up, seeing as my jeep was on its side in the right hand lane on the highway. lol

Update: Today I swapped the sye from my old case into my new-to-me case. When I took the new case apart I noticed some marks on the inside of the housing, probably from the chain slapping around so I replaced it with the chain from the busted case that I knew was good and tight. Got it all put back together and ready to go. Tomorrow I'll take the last part of the broken t-case off the trans and get this one bolted on.

My buddy dropped off the front axle from his old 04 TJ yesterday as well as all 4 front control arms and a trac bar. All for $20. I got some good friends.
Today I'm going to start swapping over parts starting with the locker first. Then put the shafts in and bolt it in.

Today I finally got the carrier out of the old axle, took out the locker, put it in the carrier for the new axle, dropped it in the housing, and put it under the jeep. Only put one shaft in since the u-joint on the other one is busted.

Necessity is the father of invention. lol

Old axle is scrap. Axle tube is bent.

Next is steering, 2 new rims and tires and new shocks and it'll be ready to ride.

While waiting for money for parts to finish fixing it, I decided to do a little modifying.
Shortened the bumper 11 inches

Start

And finished

The frame is tweaked a wee bit, by an 1/8th of an inch at the most. That much I'm not going to worry about.

Since theres nothing else I can do to fix the jeep until I get more funds to buy new shocks, rims, and tires, I decided to get some work done on the 8.8.
Got the truss about 80% fully welded on.

One really admires all the work you've done resurrecting the jeep when they look at all the damage. Good Job Aaron. I think your name is Aaron?

Glad your ok. Just so you know most states and local police write a report when there is x amount of damage or some type of vehicle related failure. Did the police take your information?? If so your insurance company might already know? Just an FYI. As for the body damage, just keep the mud on and know one will notice.

I think they did get my info, I'm not sure. I was talking to one cop while another was looking at the jeep with the fire department. Pretty sure they did though since I damaged a guard rail. But, not too worried about them knowing about it, they probably won't care too much as long as I don't claim it.

As far as the 8.8..... Got it under the jeep to test fit it. Hopefully today I will be welding out the last of the brackets. I need to rotate up the shock mounts and spread them open a little bit for the shock bottom to fit. The bottom of the shock body was contacting the spring bad so if I rotate it up it will move the shock further back away from the spring pad. Plus I'm about to order bilsteins and you mount those with the body up so that will give me a little more clearance.

Won't be ready for jeep beach. If it was, probably wouldn't have money for jeep beach. Wish I was able to go. I love jeep beach.

New shocks came in last week. Haven't had a chance to put 'em in yet thanks to working the night shift and rain yesterday. Hopefully the weather holds out this morning so I can get the front shocks on and finish the last little bit of welding on the 8.8.
