Should i even bother with Wheel Locks?

I know that wheel locks are easy for a thief or the common joe to break off given the "want/need" to do so... But making it seem a pain for anyone wanting to take my rims and tires seems like it could keep the honest person honest. Should i even bother spending $20 for wheel locks by Mcgard or not?

No. Stealing of the entire vehicle is much easier. The spare is the only that is easier to take, that's pretty much why the spare comes with a lock from the factory and that is still easy to get off.

I get a lot of folks that lose their wheel lock keys and as you stated, it generally takes me less than a minute to hammer a socket over them and remove them.

Then I got to deal with the new OEM Mopar locks that have a sleeve around the head of the lug nut that spins when you hammer a socket on. Took me about 15 minutes per side to peen enough edge interference to remove them.

If you want some that take a lot longer, try those.

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A professional can get your car faster than you could imagine. All you're doing with wheel locks is keeping the "kids" honest.

I have wheel locks but have no illusions about the abiilty of a determined person to remove them by force. They do help to keep honest people honest. We call that a psychological deterrent in law enforcement. It's like a bicycle lock -- not that difficult to defeat, but an ounce of prevention.

I am going to look iinto those new Mopar locks. Thanks for that one, Black Magic Brakes (sorry, forgot your name).

In the final analysis, it's a small investment. I've had them for about 46 years of driving and would not think of putting custom wheels on without them. I don't know if they have ever saved me a set of wheels. Look into the Mopars. Just don't lose the "key". Actually, buy a spare and put it in your toolbox at home.

I'll end up doing gorilla wheel locks on my new wheels and kill switch. Then the only way is flatbed. And yes, Im worried about the teens or lowlifes that will steal my spare.

My TJ was stolen via a flatbed towtruck, they didn't even attempt to start it.

Wheel locks are more of a PITA than would be expected by those who buy them. And wheel thieves aren't even slowed down by them, they know all the tricks of getting them off in seconds. I went through the wheel lock phase & soon discovered they weren't worth the extra PITA that they were to use so I stopped using them. That's even though my TJ has some rather pricy Walker Evans forged aluminum beadlock wheels on it.

Don't even bother they r just a pain. Plus all it take is an over sized socket to get them off. I lost my wheel lock key and all u need to get them off is a hammer and a oversized socket. The best bet is a kill switch

If you know of a method to remove these in seconds, I'm all ears. I've still got one to do on the spare to finish these off and I'm not looking forward to it taking as long as the last ones did.

You're just not an experienced wheel thief Blaine.

I'd probably just tack-weld a big nut or bolt onto it & spin it off.

Anything that makes it a little harder for thieves is a plus in my book. Hammering on a socket makes a lot of noise and a distinct sound. If I heard that it would take me half a heart beat to grab my AR and head outside. Taking your own locks off and taking someone elses off quietly are two different animals. A soft face hammer will quiet things down but it would take a lot of force to drive a socket over a lock with one.

I used a air chisle just cut a grove in lock nut then angle air chisle at a angle an nut will unscrew. This is with cheap Harbor Freight chisle too.

These are the five spoke OEM silver powdercoat rims that can't be damaged or I own them and I don't want to own them.

Be that as it may, I do remove a set of the conventional wheel locks about once a week with vise grips, slightly larger sockets hammered on and these are inset almost flush to the rim surface and not a lot of room to work.
