I have an 87 xj 2 door 4.0 that has a loud rocker knock and some other issues and I am having trouble deciding if I should switch to a tj. I've wanted a tj for a while and I'm looks for some advice on what I should do. Tj would be a 4.0, 5 speed.
If you find a good one get it regardless of years. Digger never recommends the 05 or 06 model years but really each year has their own quirks and problems. If you find one in good condition for a good price then it's a good vehicle.
If you are looking for a 5 speed for sure then Digger is correct. 05 and 06 are 6 speeds.
That depends a lot on facts not in evidence. I have an XJ and a TJ. There are things I can do with the XJ that I can't do with the TJ. If I could keep only one, it would have to be the XJ.
My XJ is my DD,TJ is my fun vehicle. They both have different purposes for me.Id say either would be a good DD but the XJ would be better at it.
