I want to change the speakers throughout my 05 TJ. The speakers in there currently are stock, I already have a new head unit installed. What speakers should I buy? Want it to sound good, but more importantly want the install to be simple. Also, when I had the head unit installed the installer said that the sub in the middle console had to be disconnected. Any ideas why?
Whichever brand speaker you choose to go with, I would go with 5.25" in the front (with an adapter plate, I used a forward facing plate I got from eBay) and go with 6.5" in the sound pods. The Kenwoods I installed in my sound pods on my 05 did not require drilling new holes, just required longer screws because the speakers don't quite fit flush in the recessed area the stock 5.25" speakers fit into. As to your sub having to be disconnected, more than likely it is blown. When I bought my TJ, the dealership had the sub disconnected because it was blown and sounded horrible. I highly recommend replacing the sub, either by replacing the sub in the console (I used the Kicker 6.5 and an external amp) or by installing a sub elsewhere in the tub
From what I've done to my '05 tj, what made the biggest difference in my opinion was the sub in the center console. I also replaced the speakers in the sound bar with kickers and that made it sound louder and cleaner, but overall not much of a difference. The problem I have now is that I bought an amp and hooked it up to the sub and now that it gets a lot more power, the sub is always hitting the console. So I have to careful and not turn it up too loud. But I'm gonna take it out and move it to the back this weekend and see how much better it sounds since the console isn't meant to handle what I have in there.
I went with Polk Audio marine grade speakers from Crutchfield. The included the adapter plates and wiring adapters. For the front and I got the db461s (4X6) and the db521s (5.25") for the sound bar as a direct replacements.
If you have the OE 6 speaker setup then the fronts are mounted in a pod since there isn't anything behind the speakers which will decrease the bass response up front. I took the pods and cut the holes out enough to mount the fronts with some insulation behind them and it made a world of difference!
Rears...
The sub I replaced with a Pyramid but that will be coming out soon for a Kicker 40CWRT672 with its two voice coils.
Great info. In response to my sub in the console, it isn't blown, it worked the day I took it into the shop to get the head unit installed. I think it may have something to do with the number of channels the head unit supports.
I get all my stuff from Crutchfield. They send you the install kits for free and they're always emailing me about sales. So you can get really good stuff for a really good price.
Whatever speakers you buy, keep this specification in mind... "Sensitivity". If they don't have at least a 90 dB (decibel) Sensitivity rating or higher, your head unit won't have enough power to fully drive them. The Polk DB series would be a good choice since they have a 92 dB Sensitivity rating.
Put another way, speakers rated to 100 watts with a 92 dB Sensitivity rating will play louder and sound better than speakers with a 500 watt rating and an 83 dB Sensitivity rating when connected to the TJ's stock radio or an aftermarket head unit without a powerful external auxiliary amplifier. Put one last way... the lower the speaker's Sensitivity rating, the more power it requires to sound good.
And most automotive speakers are water resistant if not waterproof. That is because, by far, most automotive speakers have either a mylar or polyurethane speaker cone. It's speakers with paper speaker cones that don't hold up to moisture. So there's no real need to spend extra for a marine grade speaker for a Jeep.
