Slack in tranny?

Ive noticed there is a little slackbin the tranny. What i mean is if i put in park at an angle and let off the break there is a little roll. Not much just an inch maybe. Just enoight the make it a little diff to pull back out of park. I did also notice there is a little play in the drive shaft when parked level. Should i be concerned. What i mean by play is u can rotate it back n forth a little.

Oh its an 04 sport 4.0

There will be a bit of play in the auto. The key is to see if it changes or feels likes it more to you. While driving does it slip at all? When is the last time the fluid was changed?

Ours rolls once placed in park. First couple of times it scared the bajeezus out of me, I thought I had left it in gear instead of park. Now it's just another one of those Jeep things. I either use the hand brake or let it roll a bit before I get out.

It's normal. There has to be some slack. If everything is tight, you get a ton of noise and heat. Gears are designed to mesh with a pre-determined amount of slack (measured distance) between them. What you feel when you put it in park is the parking pawl locking the transmission in place. ALL automatics do it to some extent. If the mesh with the parking pawl was too tight, you'd have difficulty getting it in and out of park.
