Smittybilt i-rack

So I got one of these things for my birthday and tried to install it today. So smittybilt's site said that you mount the base on your tire rack, then slide the wheel back on and bolt it down with the factory lugs. This leaves a square tube (looks kinda like a hitch receiver) sticking through the wheel that the rack bolts to. However the stock wheels, (even with the center cap popped out) will not slide over it.

Anyways, it fits without the spare wheel. And the cart i wanted to mount on it mounts good. But I have to carry the spare inside the jeep when it's installed.

One handy thing though, the base mount is patterned to fit both JK and TJ bolt patterns. Flip it one way for TJ, flip it 180 for JK.

Maybe I will just have to go get a spare wheel with a bigger center hole. Any ideas for a cheap but reliable 15" stock size replacement wheel that has a larger center hole.

Interesting that Smittybilt leaves that little tidbit of information out on their website, and installation instructions. (I looked.) Stock Jeep wheels have much smaller center holes than most aftermarket rims.

They did however put a big disclaimer that putting too much weight on the spare tire will cause failure. That was nice of them.

You can get a cheapo steel 15x8 wheel with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern at almost any tire store. I think I paid $45 for one for my spare years ago. Stop by some salvage yards also. They may have one for even less.

But I would not load too much on the rack if you are running your stock carrier.

From the looks of it, it is designed for small items anyway. Like a jack and a gas can. Im using it for an unloaded OA cart that doesn't fit well inside.

It looks stutdy though. On a stronger tire rack it could probably hold some decent weight.

do crager's have larger center holes? I found these on quadratec.

Cragar 3975712 - CRAGAR Series 397 Soft 8 Black Wheel for Jeep® Vehicles with 5x4.5 Bolt Pattern - Quadratec

Can probably find them cheaper, and plan to go play around at some tire stores this week to see what i can find. But as a last resort, at least the crager's look decent.

I want to say I got mine a little cheaper from Summit Racing. Plus free and FAST shipping.

I read about those you have to have aftermarket wheels to work properly I was checking it out in my quadretrec catolog it says they must have a center diameter 2.5" or greater too work properly but they do look awsome

That's curious. I wish the smittybilt site had mentioned that their product doesn't fit. I can't remember now which site I ordered from but they didn't mention it either.

For my purposes it is great though. Had to make my own configuration to come up with a cradle to sit the cart in though but it works. A few cargo straps and it's good to go.
