Smittybilt SRC tire carrier

Starting to shade to the side of Smittybilt shittybilt, today I went to open my trunk only to find my handle/lever FELL OFF...
Has this happened to anyone else?
I was thinking just carry a screwdriver and make do, any other ideas?

Yeah that's what I think I'll do, body armor looks like they make a good bumper/tire carrier combo. $700 dollars for both is pretty steep though.. What do you suggest

I have the same one.
I put red lock tight on the threads of that handle and screwed it in I haven't had a problem since as far as vibration goes mine doesn't rattle at all hardly. I don't plan on keeping the bumper forever but for the money you can't beat it lol

I had a smity swing away that rattled and was loose. The solution to the rattling was to fill the space that the retaining tab sits in with RTV and then coat the tab in Pam cooking spray. I let the RTV setup for about 30 minutes then closed the carrier. The tab imprinted into the RTV but came free without any RTV on it because of the Pam. The RTV formed a gasket of sorts which stopped all rattling. I tightened the two bolts on the bearing REALLY hard and made so sure I kept a ton of grease in it. I had no issues after that. My carrier handle was tight, but my brother's was loose. Loctite took care of that.

IMHO I wouldn't blame the mfg. Anything that is subject to constant and or violent vibrations should be loctited.

Took the tire swing off mine and put the tire back on the tailgate. The swing wouldn't stay shut.

How old is the bumper/carrier? Probably too old to return it.
You could pull the tire swing portion off of it, and go with a tub mounted carrier like an Or-Fab or Bestop.
I bought the SRC Classic bumper only. I wanted to match the bumper on the front. My friend has the tire carrier version on his YJ and he has the same problems. Rattling, latch problems, etc. etc.
I'm happy with the cheapo bumper only. No moving parts for Smitty to mess up. I paired it with a Bestop tub mounted carrier.

I'm sure it was just an oversight, but will that JK carrier you linked fit on his TJ?

When I first installed mine, it didn't rattle. After a while it developed a rattle, so I installed a De Sta Co latch, no more rattles. I've had mine on the Jeep for about five and half years with no problems at all. I still don't have any money invested in the bumper or the latch, it was all bought by the guy's insurance that rear ended me one afternoon.

Maybe your friend might want to install one of these latches to fix his rattle.

Nothing from Smittybilt would ever make it onto my list of things I'd install onto my TJ. Old man Smitty is rolling over in his grave at the crap they're selling with his name on it now.

And for those who don't know this, when Smitty died, his company doors were closed forever. The present Smittybilt company is a completely different organization, they only bought the rights from Smitty's family to use the Smittybilt name. They picked up instant name recognition when they did that, the old Smittybilt name was like gold to them. The old Smittybilt company that made great products has been completely gone for years.

The only thing Smitty I run and ever will is my tow strap. Hasn't failed me yet and I've got a winch line if it does.

I took off and junked a all the PO's SmittyBuilt bumpers and tube steps.

I have the BesTop HighRock 4x4 rear bumper with tire carrier.
No problems with it yet and seems pretty solid.

I like that it opens/closes with the rear door/tailgate.

Not to change the subject of another broken SmittyBuilt product. Do you have any pics of your jeep with the Bestop bumpers installed? Just curious.

Alright guys, reviving a dead thread.
I hate my tire carrier, it's a pain in the ass with out the lever. Can I interchange the tire carrier with another brand tire carrier?
For example this one: http://www.extremeterrain.com/body-a...j-yj-5294.html

For example this one: Body Armor Swing Arm for Rear Bumper 5294 (87-14 Wrangler YJ, TJ, and JK) - Free Shipping 5294 - Free Shipping over $75!

where their is a welder their is a way...

as for directly swapping over from one brand tire carrier to another brand; I would contact the manufacturer or find some one with the tire carrier you want to swap too and measure the spindle to see if it is the same.
