Smittybuilt Rear Tire Carrier/ Bumper - Towing

Hey, so the guy who had my Rubicon before me tried to save on a rear tire carrier. Had a huge super swamper spare mounted to the normal tire carrier and it cracked the tail gate. I bought a Smittybuilt off quadratec and installed it yesterday.

The website labeled it "easy" installation and i know some of you guys are more handy with a wrench than myself, but I spent almost 7 hours. I had to remove the bumper, drop the gas tank, drill the frame, then reassemble. Granted the first time on these kinds of jobs take a lot longer cause you don't really know what you're doing.

Anyways the jeep had a true receiver hitch on it before that connected to the frame. Obviously had to remove it for the install, but is the new one tow rated? It said on the website no but the paperwork with it said it's class 3 5000 lb. rated.

From what I understand, all aftermarket bumpers say that they're not tow rated, to immunize themselves from any lawsuits. What are you looking to tow?

I'm obviously not looking to tow anything major. I wouldn't have gotten a jeep if I were. There's just those times where, because of the limited space I have, it'd be nice to be able to pull a light trailer.

That bumper seemed pretty freaking solid....especially after drilling four additional holes....just wondering if anyone has used a bumper like this for pulling anything. I mean they put D-rings on it like it would be fine to try and pull someone out of the mud....

I'm curious to hear what people have to say on this. Why just get a hitch when you can get everything you want an an after market bumper?

I have the Smittybilt XRC rear bumper and tire carrier combo. And yes, directly from Smittybilt themselves, it is rated as a class III hitch. I too was confused by this when I first bought the bumper and installed it, so I emailed them. This was the main reason I purchased the bumper, that and I like the style of the latch mechanism and the overall design of the bumper. The coating is pretty much crap, but a can of rustoleum fixes that.

I found no other class III rated hitch equiped bumpers out there that I liked, as well as something for this price. I know lots of people do not like Smittybilt, but I am VERY pleased with this bumper/tire carrier. Everytime I open it up I think about how much I like it. In fact I don't know of any other tire carriers that have as nice of a latch system or safety latch as this:

Yeah that's sick. I went with the classic one which doesn't look that cool. It was the only one decently priced $360 + freight. Everything else seemed to jump up to $500+. But I figured after buying the Jeep only a month or so ago and just spending $200 on a head unit that is coming in I needed to take it easy. I like that bumper a lot though.

If it does a little padded tape in strategic areas will fix that.

Design and function look good. Is this the under $300 version? Thats all I see XRC on quadracrack.

I though Geoff said bestop had one out that was def. rated to tow but I can't find it. Any ideas. I'm shopping for this mod next too.

This one doesn't rattle at all. I think their first version of the XRC did rattle a bit, but this new latch system has some sort of bushing that keeps it tight. Again, really like this.

At least through Quadratec, this bumper is around $400. The tire carrier section is an additional piece that you can buy for another $250. I can't remember exactly how much I paid as I got these late last year. But still, for a class III rated bumper with tire carrier, in such a great design, you can't really beat the $650 it costs. I have seen other bumper/carriers that cost upwards of $1k, that are also not class III rated.

Again, some may say that Smittybilt stuff isn't quality, but I have to disagree at least on this bumper.

The XRC's are very well built.. and mine doesn't rattle at all either.

I think I bought the bumper, the carrier, and two d-rings for about $705 shipped to my door.

Bumper may be able to handle 5000 lbs, but your suspension, driveline and brakes probably won't. Check your owners manual for max towing capacities and call Smittybuilt and ask them what the bumper is rated for. The lowest numbers are your limiting factors. I built my own, and made it stout, but would never tow over 2500 pounds with my wrangler.

I took me just a little under your 7 hours to install my Tomken, including dropping the gas tank, drilling, touch up painting etc. Don't feel bad. I always try to take my time and do a good job.

I think this goes without saying. No one should ever tow anything without consulting the manual first. And yes, the limit is 2,500 lbs for a TJ, so there you go. For me, the class III is great not just because I can tow up to the TJ's capacity, but also that it can handle 500 lbs of tounge wait. Meaning that the hitch cargo rack I have that is also rated for 500 lbs (thank you harbor freight!) can be used with no worries when we go camping.
