smittybuilt xrc bumpers

Ok right off the bat I want to say I am not buying smittybuilt bumpers

So by now I am sure you are all thinking what a silly title for a thread.

Well lets see if I can fix that.

So I have a buddy with a Fab Shop, Already talked to him and he said to drop by when I know what I want and he will make me up some bumpers and give me a damn good deal on them.

Now we get to the smittybuilt bumpers.

1: I like the looks of the over all design of these bumpers and was wondering if any of you that run them could give me a review of the overall functionality of the design. Just want to make sure there isn't something that you guys have found that should have been done a bit differently.

2:If any of you have either the front or rear or both, could i trouble you for some decent pictures of them for starting point on designing my new bumpers? Just looking for some good head ons, side views from the top etc and most of what I have found online just do not show things as clearly as I would like to see them.

Thanks guys

Strangler,

I took a look at your profile, looks like you have the SRC tube bumpers. I'm looking for info on the XRC series. Thanks for trying

This probably won't help you much - nor is something you probably haven't already tried - but, since you aren't having much luck with responses, you might try a google image search for xrc bumper wrangler. Most of the images are from vendors but there are a few from various forums that show up in the search results.
Wish I could be more help.

Thanks for the bump

As you guessed, I have tried that route. I am looking for some better close up shots and from some different angles. Most of the ones I have found online, are either vendor pics, which are not very good or close, or the standard head on shots.

Front bumper and tire carrier came today, rear bumper and rock sliders should be here tomorrow. For now, here's a few pics of the front bumper. If there's anything you want to see in more detail, let me know and I can go grab a few more pics. If you want pics of it installed, gonna need to wait a few days for that

Not to be a jerk or anything, but more to play Devil's Advocate. If you buddy is planning on copying a copyrighted bumper from a major manufacturer, isn't that theft of the patent? I mean, Smittybilt has invested many hours and materials into their products to sell at a profit. If someone is to copy the design, then the original designer may go for copyright infringment. You are after all posting your desire to copy the design on a public forum. Just something to think about.

Kennewick,
Thanks man exactly what i was looking for, if you could do the same with just the rear bumper and no tire carrier it would be great.

Jeff,

While I understand what you are trying to say I ask that you read my post again, I said I like the over all design and that I wanted pictures as a starting point for my own bumpers.....No where did I say i intended to duplicate them. I just need to have a starting point of what I am looking for and then we will take it from there and come up with something I am sure you wont see as a "copy"

KennewickGuy, do you know if the rear bumper sits out of the way of the exhaust? I know you have not recieved it yet, but have you heard about it maybe?

I got the dynomax cat-back and I had to cut 3 inches off the end of the pipe to make it fit with my hidden hitch and it flows right on to the hitch and its rusting it out pretty bad! That is the main reason I was going for the smittybilt was because of the class 3 hitch it has built in..

I was just curious to see if it will clear the exhaust pipe? if not I will just have to get it angled out or down.

As long as he doesn't plan on selling them he can copy all he wants, no law against it. It's just when you start selling them, but you must remember that smittybutt is one of the biggest copiers there is.

Rear bumper came today, sorry about being a bit late with the pics but here they are.

Assuming there's no complications, bumpers should be installed along with tire carrier, rock rails, lift, tires, flares within the next couple days. If you want any pics of the bumpers after installed, let me know and I'll grab a few once it's all put together

Personally, just the plain look of them screams weak (no offense to anybody, thats just how it looks to me). In the pic it looks like 10 gauge steel. Which, for me is a little thin. When you hit a rock with that it's going to fold up. I'd use at least 7 ga sheet. Its much stronger, 1/4 would be awesome but it will weigh double what the 10ga does. Maybe I'm wrong and they do have a heavier gauge on there....

plus the front bumper could use more gusseting

I think they used 3/16" steel, the plate behind the hitch for the rear is thicker, maybe 1/4". Should have pics tomorrow sometime, got the BL & MML installed today, and stock bumpers removed. Rest is going in tonight and tomorrow after we get back from sturgeon fishing

I sure hope they did. Seeing as they probably have some engineers designing and doing some FEA I should hope so. But thats good news! Enjoy the new parts!

I was thinking about getting this bumper too, but the only off-roading I do is going to Nags Head on the beach, so I didn't plan to get a winch.

Do you plan to put a winch on this bumper? How does it look installed with no winch?

Thanks!

Hasn't be installed yet, but we're putting in the suspension lift today and if there's time I'll get it mounted and grab a few pics. Probably today or tomorrow. I haven't gotten a winch for it yet, that's on the to-do list but no idea when I'm going to get around to doing it.

Awsome to know others like this bumper to. I have had mine for a while now and have quite a few Smittybilt products. I would have to say I have ran into/fallen on/and scraped up, quite a few things with the bumper and it only has scratched the paint. Oh and the bumper has a better paint job on it than any of my other SBilt stuff. I also drilled some holes in the side "wings" for my stock fogs as the bar is way to high for them to work properly. Oh and I had a lame plastic sticker with a foam backing on the tube that I ripped of when I got it. I would much rather of had that nicer XRC logo on it

Those are older pictures I just realized. I will get you a direct side shot to show you how far it sticks out. It doesn't have as much clearance as I would have hoped.
