Soft Top Query

Hi Guys
I have a '97 with a factory soft top which is now quite scabby and have sourced a Bestop sunrider soft top, only thing is that it is for an '03 onwards model. Will this fit on my '97?. It is new and comes complete with the required hardware as supplied by Bestop.
Regards
Gerald

Ugh. This is often discussed every couple of months. I don't think there has been any concrete resolution. I got nowhere with Bestop or any of the major outlets when attempting to investigate this. Most anybody can tell you is there are different part #'s for 97-02 and 03-06 and therefore one will not work on the other. I question that, BUT I have read on here and several other sites that there are some minor alignment changes to the w/s angle, door drop, etc. Then again, I think a few folks on here can state otherwise, having used newer/older versions on their respective TJ's. Best bet is to get in touch with somebody at BT that actually has some technical info/knowledge.
Good luck and be sure to post up your findings.

i'm pretty sure it has to do with the way it mounts to the windshield. it should fit everywhere else. you may just need a different mount on the front.

The fabric shape/size itself is the same from 97 to 2006, it's the front hardware (header) that is different between 2002 and older and 2003 and newer. When you buy a new replacement top, you can always just use the same header you have now. I bought a near-new Sailcloth top and just swapped it onto my existing header. You unwrap your existing top from around the header something like a half or full wrap where you'll then see the dozen or so little screws that secure the top to the header. Remove 'em and then just install the new top in the reverse order. It's easier than it sounds.

exactly. specifically, its the latch holes on the windshield that are just a little narrower than the later years. You can make a later model tj supertop fit an earlier model tj just by using an earlier model header clamps like branford suggested... or grind a little on the later model header clamp to make it fit the smaller clamp holes in the windshield.

Well, the 03 top fitted on just fine! all weather proof and seals quite tightly. No problems in the installation at all.
Cheers
