Soft Top Question

I just purchased a factory soft top frame from a local salvage yard. It has what appears to be a pretty nice top, minus the windows. Now, my question is how do I determine, without a doubt, what brand the top is. I know that Geoff has said that Bestop makes all of the factory tops, but, I have no tags on mine to ease my mind enough to order replacement windows. I had originally planned on ordering a new top anyway, but, if this one is as good as it appears, and I can save a lot of money, I will just buy windows. My Wrangler is a 97 4.0 Sport. I also have a hard top now. Thanks, Chuck

Post a pic of the top. that will make it easier to identify.

Yeah, a couple pix would help. Plus, unless someone removed tags, it's likely to be a factory top.

Just to be clear, you have the frame and the top, not just the frame. Right?

Try this page to see if you can identify the hardware.

You may also need to narrow down the year before ordering the window panels: at some point they changed from zipping from left to right to zipping from right to left. So you'll need to identify which way your top goes, and make sure they match.

It is definitely a factory hard top frame. My only question was how do you determine if it s a "factory Bestop" or has someone already replaced it with another brand. When did they change from left to right, too right to left?

I believe the year they changed was 2002 or 2003 (pretty sure 2003 was the switch). Brand-wise, I would bet that it's a factory top. Just post pics and we can be sure. With most replacements, you shouldn't have a problem using the OEM windows.

Funny thing was I did the same thing as you. I purchased a frame from a local yard by my house for $100, and the place threw the top in with no windows thinking it was garbage. It's actually in pretty decent condition. I was originally bidding on windows on ebay for $110 ($210 not bad), and then my friend referred me to a shop by my house that specializes in nothing but Jeep (No Excuses Jeep, New Egypt, NJ). Guy had a set of windows lying around and gave 'em to me for $30. I basically got a whole soft top kit for $130. You can't beat that!

On the 1997-2002 windows, the zipper is on the left window and on the right side soft top. On the 2003-2006, the zipper is on the right side window and the left side soft top.

On ebay (I was sniping this before), a guy has a right/left that he's selling

Bestop is the only manufactuer of the "factory" frame. The design is pattented.

Thanks for the input. I washed the top last night, and it is in excellent condition. I will start looking for windows as soon as I set it on the Jeep this weekend to verify that there are no hidden problems. Thanks again, Chuck
