Soft Top Question

Hi All,

I just put the soft top on my TJ for the first time. I don't think its an OE soft top. I've got a few questions for the group which I couldn't find through searching or googling.

First - The soft top didn't come with any door surrounds. It came with these metal frames, but there is quite the gap between the door and the roll bar. Would OE door surrounds fit/mount here? If not any idea who makes this top so I can look for some surrounds?

Secondly - the front bar that connects the windshield to the soft top uses knobs to secure the latches, and not the standard hinges that I see online a lot. The bar seems to be more permanent, with the soft top securing to the bar. When I take the soft top down, the bar seems to stay in place. Does this seem right?

Anyone have an idea who makes my soft top? There are small storage pockets in the front corners, which it looks like Rugged Ridge puts on their soft tops?

Thanks all!

James

Do you have any photos with the top on? Even if it's not on perfectly, it'd give us some idea. You are correct in it is not the original top. Good luck!

Bump.

I'll snap some pictures tonight when I put it back up. I put the soft top on yesterday, and it only made it about 15 minutes before I pulled it back to go topless =)

Thanks,
James

None of that stuff seems right. The knobs in the windshield channel look like the ones that go to the door surrounds. If you use them in the header, the top would have to go over the knobs. It would be too bulky and leave a hump under the top. That cannot be where they go. My channel mounts the same way and it's a long hex head bolt. The stuff you have mounted looks like some kind of bow system. Can't help you there.

Insofar as the windshield channel itself, I have one but it is for a safari top. My soft top has the channel permanently attached. I've never seen a set up like yours.

I have those same bars on my TJ, but the top of the bar has velcro on it which matches the velcro on the soft top. I believe mine is a Bestop Replace-a-Top, but I don't know for sure (the PO put it on).

In the summer the velcro on the bars heats up, looses its sticky-ness and makes the whole bar and top a sticky mess. Fun times!

Find a tag on the soft top that has a part number and google it to see if there are instructions online.

Thanks John and DMB. I'll see about putting long hex bolts in the channel instead. And I'll look for a serial number somewhere in the top.

Thanks
James

Here's a few shots of the soft top. If anyone has any ideas as to who makes it, that way I can hunt down and see if I'm missing some hardware. The zippers on the side windows and rear window are all 3 zippers, unlike most of the youtube videos I see where they are 1 zipper.

And it has these small pockets in the front corners:

Thanks all!
James

I have the same rampage top on my 03 and I hate it. It does not fit right around the doors and the top is loose on the frame. I have a factory frame and a new replace-a-top I'm going to be putting on as soon as my new header gets here. I told a young kid at work he can have my Rampage top for free. It is new and came on the Jeep. It is so bad I was just going to throw it in the trash till he said he has no top for his TJ. Mine has bolts on the header and not the knobs like you have.

Thanks for the reply. Two fast questions:

Do you have door surrounds? I have trouble picturing how the windows would wrap around the surrounds.

Does the top pull back the 90 degree bar seen in this picture when you pull the top back? The way mine is set up, I need to take a quick release out of it after I pull the top back in order to fold it backwards

Thanks!
James

No door surrounds. Just the square and round tubing like yours. The top and windows wrap around the tubes and velcro in place. You do need to release the quick release to get the top down.

I have a factory top on my 97 TJ and it has door surrounds. They would not work with this top. If you get to check out a factory type top you would love how it works next to this top.
