Soft top selection help..

I am gearing up for summer and this hardtop thing is a bit of a pain..taking it on and off for rain and weather changes in Arkansas will kill me if I keep it up..

Suggestions for soft tops are welcome...I am not familiar with soft tops and their components as I have never owned one..I do know I need a header channel and I already have the hardware in the rear for a top..

Here is what I would like in a top:

Functionality: I would like to be able to run Safari top until the rain comes or its cold and throw it together pretty quick..

Black in color

Quality..Im big on buying USA made and high quality, I dont care about cost, as long as its worth it..

Looks: I am loving the frameless tops, that slanted back end looks sweet, any disadvantages or problems with this?

Fire away with suggestions please.. Its my DD for now and I dont drive over 65 and do alot of offroading.

Thanks for your help..

I'm in your neck of the woods, so I see the same crappy weather lol.

I bought a Supertop last year for mine and have regretted it ever since. If i had it to do over, I'd go with the Trektop NX from Bestop. It's one of the frameles, slanted in the rear tops you mentioned.

There are actually 2 similar tops I like. The Trektop and the Rampage Frameless. The reason I'd pick the Trektop is it comes with door surrounds, which I don't have. It also has the sunrider feature, which means you can flip the front of the top backwards like a big sunroof. I'm not sure if the Rampage does that or not.

The Rampage does have a built in bag in the rear that holds the windows when removed. I like the hell out of that feature.

Decisions, decisions

frameless tops are definitly really convenient and if i ever bought a new soft top that is what i'd get, mostlikely the bestop one. but in general you cant lose with a bestop

I didnt know the bestop one has that sunrider feature, and it comes with all those parts you need to install it. But its also like $200 more than the rampage. I have the Rampage top and I love it.

Few things I will say is that the bestop one looks better with the rear windows on, there are less wrinkles than the rampage. and it just looks better, more like a finished product. But, I will also say that with the rampage it is highly convenient to have the storage bag that you can take the windows with you and they wont be in the way of anything, its great. But as far as soft tops go... I wouldnt buy one of those regular soft tops, its frameless or nothing for me. I like when the windows are off it looks like you just have a safari top instead of just laid your top back. Also I like that I still have shade when the windows are off. If you want some pics Ill be more than happy to post some of the rampage.

Rampage top.
Off (almost always)

On:

You can see the wrinkles in the rear window I was talking about, the Bestop one doesnt have those... ever lol. But the ability to take the windows off and store them under the top was a win for me.

Edit: I have had this top for nearly a year and no issues as of yet, No fading, ripping, all the zippers work perfectly.

If you have the hardware, the replacement top works good too. I got mine last fall from pavement ends. I love the look and quality and only took about 20 min to install with the hardware already mounted on the jeep. I got it from Morris 4x4 for 239.00 before shipping and tax.

I've also got a Rampage top. I keep mine in safari mode almost year round until it starts to snow. The problem is, the top isn't exactly removable. Same with any frameless. You have to remove and reinstall the top, and it's not exactly a 5 minute job. I haven't had the wrinkling issue, my top is pulled tight. I'm wondering by the last pic if that rear corner is in all the way?

Probably not, I only put it on 5 min before it starts to rain. And even then it only goes on if its supposed to rain for more than 2 days in a row. Have a pic of you windows on? I havent seen one without those wrinkles yet.

Yes I do. They stay up there until I need them.

I have a Rampage top as well and these pictures are only an hour after it was installed. A lot of the wrinkles have smoothed out but some are still remaining.

Installed my Rampage soft top last weekend. Heard all the talk about cold weather install , lucky in socal it was 75*, went on smooth. Like another post said it doesnt come with door surrounds but i found a couple on CL between $50 and $100. Anyway I really like it, seems well built, time will tell.

Rampage frameless.... love it.

Store the windows in the top, or take the whole top off and store it in the detachable bag.
You can even fold the bag with complete top in half and put it on the floor between the back of the front seats and the rear seat.
Once you get used to folding it up and putting it in the storage bag it can be done so smooth that no one can tell that there is windows in it.

Do you have to have roll bar pads for it to fit right, or do they help?

Question for you guys with the Rampage top.

What header and tailgate bar are you using? I have a Bestop bolt on header and the tailgate bar that came with my Supertop. I wonder if they'll work with the Rampage frameless? All I'd have to come up with then is door surrounds, and like said above, you can find those on CL pretty easily.

I have pads, but I don't think Liyeller does... at least not on his rear roll cage.

I am in the same boat as you and have been researching quit a bit i always end up back to the Trektop NX. While i like the look of the rampage and the price once you purchase everything needed to make a rampage work you might as well spend the extra $ on the Trektop. It seems to be a lot more versatile as well. Pick it up on amazon its cheaper then prty much everywhere else. Rampage setup on amazon will cost 422 if you go with sailcloth better quality material and then easily another 100$ to get what you need to be able to install it..

Trektop NX $615.05 (Everything you need)
Amazon.com: Bestop 56820-15 Trektop NX Black Denim Soft Top for Wrangler 97-06: Automotive

Rampage Setup
$422.69

Windshield Channel
$31.38
http://www.amazon.com/Rampage-901004...4091266&sr=1-4

Tailgate bar kit $48.73
Not sure if this is needed for the rampage as well? i think it is
http://www.amazon.com/Bestop-52600-0...=pd_sim_auto_4

Total of atleast $502.80 and im not sure if you need even more parts. Door surrounds? i dunno havent been able to find that answer yet... Im just going to go with the Trektop myself. So much $ however...

That could be the reason I have wrinkles. I dont have roll bar pads on the rear of the roll cage. (I like the yellow better than purple lol)

And yes you need to have door surrounds. The bestop tailgate bar will work since I had the windjammer tonneau cover combo and didnt have to change anything at all to install the rampage top.

I have the Rampage and I absolutely love it. The storage option is what won it over for me, as well as the price I was able to get it for. I bought mine on truckaddons.com for a helluva deal, they were having some major discounts. The top was $372 for the sailcloth material and the Rampage tailgate bar was around $40. I already had a windshield channel from Bestop and it works fine. I haven't had the issue with wrinkles though. Got my surrounds off eBay.

Ditto. the storage bag did it for me too... I couldn't imagine not having it now. What do you do with the windows if you don't have the storage?

What do the door surrounds look like? And would I not be able to use the factory tailgate bar? And I have a bikini top that already uses a header bar. Do you know if the would work?

Heres a pic of the door surrounds. The header bar you have should work fine with the rampage top, as for the tailgate bar, as long as its the bar that you slide the window into it should be fine.

I know for a fact that I have those door surrounds already. Cuz of my soft top. And I think my tailgate bar would work too! So how much is the sailcloth top without all that crap to go with it??
