sound bar extra wire / wiring woes

So yesterday I decided to install the sound bar on my 98 Ė itís a super easy hardware install, seeing as it pretty much just bolts on. The hardware package that came with it had some too small thread formers with it, so I needed to get the right size from the LHS.

Wiring however, was a different beast. To the best of my knowledge, I did it wrong. I checked the forums, I watched every YouTube video available (that I found, anyhow Ė and there really wasnít one thatís specifically Ďhow to wireí), and followed the instructions on the paper. Since my TJ was not previously wired, I had to figure out how to wire the thing myself Ė which what I ended up doing was splicing the bars wires to the front speakers, attaching the ground wire to another ground wire and calling it. I could not find any other areas to put the red and white(Left) or green and red (Right)wires, so thatís where they went. My problem with it is that :

Thereís another wire thatís not connected to anything. It was labeled ď1aĒ and since the lights on the sound bar donít function currently, I figure thatís what thatís for. Where does this go?

Because theyíre spliced to the front speakers, I canít play with the radio settings and even stuff out if I wanted to. Where are the wires actually supposed to go? Is there another area I didnít find where I can plug in for rear speakers? Iíll take a picture of what I did tomorrow when I'm back with it so that maybe one of you guys can point something out I missed.

rear speakers are on p 119
on the back of the deck there should be a wiring harness,
left rear
- brown/light brown
+brown/yellow

right rear
- dark brown/pink
+ dark brown/white

sound bar dome light is p 114
looks like its a pink/white coming from fuse 17

You shouldn't tie them in with the front speakers since that will overload the radio speaker output and eventually will kill the radio. We are assuming this is a factory radio and not aftermarket and if this is the case, locate the rear wiring for the speakers as posted above to hook the soundbar speakers to. You can tap that soundbar dome light to the factory dome on the floorboard. Fuse #17 stated above is what supplies 12v to the interior lights and radio.

It just occurred to me, did I place the ground wire in the right spot/is it ok there? Its attached to the screw where other grounds are.

Alright, so I pulled the deck and this is what I found - I couldnt match up the colours with what was posted above so I thought maybe one of you fine ladies/gents could point out which is which.

This is what I found when I pulled the deck : the red/white are capped and not used, the plug goes into the back of the deck - no other inputs are available on the back of the deck.

This is whats behind one of the speakers (left side)

and this is what I ended up doing (note: the black piece was there already, and all I did was plug the wires into em)

bumping this, since I still have not resolved this issue. I would prefer not to bring it to a detail shop to do this, since I feel its probably just a matter of cutting/splicing these wires.

On my 97 when I added a sound bar I looked on ebay and found the wiring from a TJ for the sound bar. It plugs in under the steering column and the other end plugs into the sound bar. That was all it took to get the speakers and dome light working.

if you wanna do it neatly without splicing into the harness at the headunit, you can find the wires near the steering wheel behid the dash and splice in there

On this plug there should be 4 "pairs" of like colored wires like 2- purple one solid, one with a stripe, 2- green one with a stripe and one without. Those are your speaker outputs. I would connect your sound bar directly to those. You can Google your head unit brand and model # to get the exact info though.

so I looked for that plug under the steering column and either I couldnt find it or I wasnt quite sure what it should look like. I searched some of the other threads and I've found that others also can't find it. Can you (or anyone) take a picture of it and show me what I'm looking for?

It's a red plug. Here is the wiring like I got for my TJ. The red plug plugs in under the steering column and the white plug plugs into the sound bar.

I'll try to get a pic of mine today.

OK, Here is the best shot I could get. You can see my old red plug that I took out and the new one plugged into the bottom. I think the old plug has the wires for the rear wiper and defrost for a hard top. I don't have a hard top for this Jeep so I did not add them to the new plug. The plug is on the side wall next to the clutch pedal. The old plug had the top holes blanked off. The new plug has the bottom holes blanked off.

ok so I ended up buying that plug you linked me to and when I brought it to the Jeep, I noticed that my soundbars input is 6 pins in a square plug, and the plug purchased is 6 pins in a row. Can I splice them to the other connector, or did I buy the wrong thing?

Heres a pic of the sound bars connector:

and heres a pic of the side wall by my clutch:

I did not plug anything in yet, but I noticed that other red plug there is that where this new plug would go?

I just unplugged the red plug that was there and plugged in the red plug that has the sound bar wiring on it. I think the wires on the red plug that I removed are for the hard top wiring. I don't have a hard top on mine so I did not transfer the wires from the old plug to the new plug for the sound bar. The white flat plug is for a stock sound bar. You must have an aftermarket sound bar with a square plug. I'm sure you could just splice the plug on.

If that plug is a plug for an after market radio, it is probably spliced into the stock colored wires further back. See if you can cut the tape back and look for the same colors as Iron head Jed posted in post #2 for your speaker wires. The dome light wires, you may have to pick up at the courtesy light....pink/white (hot), and yellow (ground leg) Do not attach the yellow to ground, but only to the negative wire on the dome light or your courtesy lights will be on full time.

I seem to remember that plug being an extender thing/converter to the stock plug.

I wanted to thank every person who replied in the thread for the help - I'm all fixed up and the sound bar is working as it should (minus the lights, which I will get to one day).
