Sound Bar light wiring trouble

I just purchased and installed the vdp textured 2 speaker soundbar in my 99 tjr, and I am having dificulty wiring it up. I connected the power wire to a constant power source and that works fine, they turn on when i tilt them to either side, however, where I am having problems is with the door activated aspect. I spliced the remote wire into the wire for the under dash light on the passenger side. The overhead light is activated by the door, however, it is reversed. When I close the door, the light turns on, when I open it, it turns off. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas as to why it is doing this or how I should go about fixing this, or if there is somwhere else I should be connecting that wire that is better than where I am trying. Thanks

Your door switch is wired for normally closed. It should be changed to normally open, meaning the switch is normally open when the door is closed.

The switch should have three poles (or terminals) one is a common, the other two would be normally open, and normally closed. You have one reversed.

I believe I know what your problem is…. Explaining it might be a problem in itself.
OK… I’ll give it a shot. Your door switch is a switch to ground. With the door closed the switch is open, and with the door open the switch is closed. The wire going to your light under your dash is a switched ground wire. That light has a “always hot” (12volt) wire going to the other side of the lamp. If you spliced into the switched ground wire (which you should) but your light bar is wired with the other side of the lamps to ground, then when your door is opened (ground switch closed) you have a ground on both sides of the lamp. When you closed the door (ground switch open) the light bar will pull current through the lamp under the dash and light, but not as bright as they should. One way to prove this theory is to remove the lamp that is under the dash. If you do this the light bar should no longer light when the door is closed.

Now to solve the problem. The other side of you light bar lamps needs to go to 12volts not ground.

I have no idea if I made this clear or not. If you need a diagram, I can draw it up for you. I am a very visual guy, a lot of times word problems go right over my head.

Hope this helps,
Frank

Ah, I think Frank is right. I don't think I read the part about the power from the lamp under the dash well enough. I assumed it was also tied into a switch for the door. I didn't catch the part about using the ground for the dash lamp, I was thinking he wa just getting power there.

I think you explained it perfectly, Frank. That is the quickest and easiest solution.

I understand completely, thats what me and my dad were thinking. The question is now, where do I splice into so that they work correctly with the door?

If it is as I think it is, then you are wired correctly with the light under the dash. the lamps at the light bar need their other wire hooked up to +12.
